[ASA] ASA Prizes now open for nominations - CLOSING DATE - 15 February 2023

Nominations are now open for the following ASA prizes:

  *   Bok Prize for outstanding research in astronomy by an Honours or eligible Masters student
  *   Charlene Heisler Prize for the most outstanding PhD thesis in astronomy or closely related field
  *   Louise Webster Prize for outstanding research by a scientist early in their post-doctoral career
  *   Anne Green Prize for a significant advance or accomplishment by a mid-career scientist
  *   NEW - Emerging Leaders in Astronomy Software Development Prize (sponsored by ARDC) for outstanding contributions to the development of open-source software by an early career researcher.
CLOSING DATE for all prizes is Wednesday 15 February 2023.

All nominations received will be acknowledged with a confirmation email. If a confirmation email is not received within 2 business days, please contact the Prizes and Awards Coordinator.
The ASA is strongly committed to improving the representation and status of women in astronomy. The goal of the Society is that female candidates should comprise at least 40% of the nominations for each prize and acknowledges the support of institutions for helping to achieve this. The fraction of female candidates nominated for each prize across the previous five year is included below.


Bok Prize - Closing Date: Wednesday 15 February 2023
For most outstanding Honours/Masters thesis in astronomy or a closely related field. Eligible Masters students are those who have entered their Masters degree directly from a 3 year undergraduate degree (without undertaking an Honours year).

  *   All degree requirements must have been completed in 2022.
  *   Each Australian University can submit a maximum of two nominations per year (unless a special case can be made for an extra nomination).
  *   Nominations must be endorsed by the Head of the nominee's academic unit, in consultation with their academic staff. The Head should also certify that the nominee's degree requirements were completed in 2022.
  *   Nominations must be submitted by the candidate's supervisor.
Percentage of female nominations in previous years: 67% (2022), 46% (2021), 38% (2020),  62% (2019), 0% (2018)

Charlene Heisler Prize - Closing Date: Wednesday 15 February 2023
For most outstanding PhD thesis in astronomy or a closely related field. The PhD thesis must have been accepted (but not necessarily conferred) by an Australian university during 2022.

  *   Each Australian University can submit a maximum of two nominations per year (unless a special case can be made for an extra nomination).
  *   Nominations must be endorsed by the Head of the nominee's academic unit, in consultation with their academic staff. The Head should also certify that the nominee's degree requirements were completed in 2022.
  *   Nominations must be submitted by the canditate's supervisor.
Percentage of female nominations in previous years: 42% (2022), 18% (2021), 45% (2020), 38% (2019), 44% (2018)

Louise Webster Prize - Closing Date: Wednesday 15 February 2023
For outstanding research by a scientist early in their post-doctoral career, based on the scientific impact of a single research paper (within astronomy or a closely related field), which has the nominee as first author.

  *   The nominee must have had their PhD conferred within five years prior to the nomination deadline (acceptable leaves of absence from active research will be taken into consideration when determining eligibility).
  *   NEW CHANGE: The nominee must be an ASA member. There are no restrictions on how long the membership has been held.
Percentage of female nominations in previous years: 50% (2022), 80% (2021), 50% (2020), 50% (2019), 100% (2018)

Anne Green Prize - Closing Date: Wednesday 15 February 2023
For a significant advance or accomplishment by a mid-career scientist,  based on a nominated body of work that supports the scientific accomplishment and the subsequent impact of the research (within astronomy or a closely related field).

  *   The nominated body of work must have been published in refereed scientific journals, appearing in final published form within 5 years prior to the nomination deadline (acceptable leaves of absence from active research will be taken into consideration when determining eligibility).
  *   The nominee must have had their PhD conferred 5 to 15 years prior to the nomination deadline (acceptable leaves of absence from active research will be taken into consideration when determining eligibility).
  *   The nominee is required to have been an ASA member for at least two years prior to nomination for the award
Percentage of female nominations in previous years: 33% (2022), 29% (2021), 40% (2020), 40% (2019), 50% (2018)

NEW PRIZE - Emerging Leaders in Astronomy Software Development - Closing Date: Wednesday 15 February 2023
This prize is sponsored by ARDC for outstanding contributions to the development of open-source software by an early career researcher, defined as a PhD student or postdoctoral researcher that does not have a permanent/faculty position. There is no post-PhD time limit restriction.

  *   The astronomy software - such as new utilities tools, applications, libraries, modules or frameworks - must have been developed as part of one specific project within 5 years prior to the nomination deadline.
  *   The software must have been intended to be used widely, to have been distributed with an open-source license and is being actively maintained.
  *   Nominations that contribute to a team-based effort are eligible for the Prize but the nomination should clearly show evidence and delineation of the individual contribution made by the nominee.
  *   The nominee must have been funded or supported by Australian Funders or Institutions, or must have resided in Australia or been affiliated with a Australian Institute when the software was developed or their contribution was made.
  *   The nominee must be an ASA member.
