From jrmurray at swin.edu.au Tue Apr 19 13:38:10 2022 From: jrmurray at swin.edu.au (James Murray) Date: Tue, 19 Apr 2022 03:38:10 +0000 Subject: [ASA] ESO Studentship Programme: call for applications Message-ID: Dear ASA student members, The European Southern Observatory (ESO) offers PhD students the opportunity to spend between 6 months and 2 years working alongside ESO scientific staff through the ESO Studentship Programme. There are 2 application deadlines each year, the next of which is 31 May 2022. A number of Australian graduate students have benefited from this opportunity since the commencement of Australia?s Strategic Partnership with ESO. ESO have just released two instructional pdfs to support the latest call for applications. Applications require coordination of Australian and ESO ends so, if you are interested, please start your application early. In the PDF documents, ESO says explicitly: ? ?For this purpose, the ESO supervisor should be contacted well in advance of the application deadlines (next deadline is 31 May 2022)?. ? ?Applicants are strongly advised to trigger these invitations [to their home institute supervisor and ESO supervisor to provide letters of reference] (using the Web application form) well in advance of the application deadline (can be done before the final submission of the application).? The attached PDF?s also include links to: ? detailed information about the studentship program ? lists of current ESO Staff and fellows and their research interests ? lists of PhD projects currently being offered by ESO staff ? details of employment conditions and benefits ? relevant FAQ?s (and contact addresses for further questions) about the studentships and application process. Good luck! Dr James Murray Director of Programs Astronomy Australia Ltd T: 03 9214 8426 M: 0409703929 E: james.murray at astronomyaustralia.org.au W: astronomyaustralia.org.au P: P.O. Do you want to know how to better manage your own datasets? Do you want to know more about the Virtual Observatory and what it can do for you? If the answer to any of these questions is YES, then put 15-16 June 2022 in your calendar for the Optical Data Centre/Data Central workshop! The workshop will run for two half days in Australian and NZ friendly timezones, with presentations, demonstrations and tutorials that will show you what facilities we provide, but also how you can access data from the AAT Archive, and the ESO and SkyMapper TAP services, along with all the data that Data Central hosts. We will also describe how you can manage your data so that others can get the most out of it. Please email us at admin at datacentral.org.au to express interest in the workshop. Do you need assistance running or installing ESO pipeline software? We can help with the new Australian ESO Data Helpdesk, an initiative of the Optical Data Centre (ODC) available here: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/zh7GCL7EwMfPNRqNxfB6zPu?domain=odc.org.au ! Through this Helpdesk you can: * Report a problem with ESO pipelines * Get help installing ESO pipelines on your laptop or desktop * Get assistance for general ESO pipeline problems and questions. * Request access to one of our remote pipeline servers (science case required) * Request a new ESO pipeline be installed on our remote pipeline servers Note that you?ll need a Data Central account to access this system, and you can register here: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/_RqKCMwGxOt5xqPxKhkjk6M?domain=accounts.datacentral.org.au if you don?t have one. The Optical Data Centre (ODC) is a collaboration between AAO-Macquarie University, Australian National University and NCI. It is funded under the Astronomy National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) Program via Astronomy Australia Ltd (AAL). Thanks! Simon [Data Central] Simon O'Toole ?
