From cfluke at swin.edu.au Mon Apr 4 09:37:03 2022 From: cfluke at swin.edu.au (Christopher Fluke) Date: Sun, 3 Apr 2022 23:37:03 +0000 Subject: [ASA] Call for Participants: Visual Discovery in Data-Intensive Disciplines Message-ID: <167DBCAA-C413-4392-BF1F-B7C75627F59D@swin.edu.au> Dear all, Call for Participants: Understanding and improving the process of visual discovery in data-intensive observational disciplines We thank participants who provided responses to this survey in 2021. Researchers from Swinburne University of Technology are recruiting researchers and postgraduate students working in the broad fields of Astronomy and Earth Observation sciences. The purpose of the project is to gain understanding of the current work practices of researchers in these two data-intensive disciplines. In particular, the project aims to investigate the role of visual inspection of images in the two disciplines. This includes understanding experiences with formal and informal training in visual inspection of data, and the extent to which visual inspection and/or automated solutions are used in current work activities. Volunteers will be asked to complete an online survey, delivered through the Qualtrics Experience Management platform, which should take no more than 15 minutes to complete. Survey responses will be collected anonymously. Prior to commencing the survey, we ask that you please read the Consent Information Statement, which is accessible from: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/6Ev0CJyBrGf8qD7WQcV4dxN?domain=tinyurl.com To access the survey please click on the link below or cut-and-paste the link into your Web browser: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/lGTLCK1DvKTq2GjyrfvrKs0?domain=tinyurl.com The survey will remain open for responses until Friday 20 May 2022. This research has received ethics approval by or on behalf of Swinburne University of Technology's Human Research Ethics Committee. That is why the IAU Office of Astronomy for Education is embarking on a massive translation drive for basic astronomy education resources ? in particular for languages where there currently are comparatively few such resources. Such translations must be faithful, and scientifically correct. To support translators, we are creating a multilingual astronomy glossary with 400 astronomy-related terms relevant for primary or secondary schools, along with definitions for these terms. The first version of our glossary is in English, and here is the first part where we need your help: Help us to make sure that our glossary definitions are correct! The reviewing process is very simple: You log in and review as few or as many separate definitions as you have time for. In addition to scientists, we are also looking for teachers with experience in teaching astronomy at primary or secondary school level to help us with the review. Simply fill in the reviewer registration form to get started ? we have tried to make this as easy for reviewers as possible! Once the English version of the glossary is reviewed and ready, we will start with the translations. If you could help us translate the glossary into a language other than English, we would love to hear from you! Please contact deacon at astro4edu.org and we will notify you as soon as we start with the relevant translations. Thank you The IAU OAE team -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL: From jesse.vandesande at sydney.edu.au Fri Apr 8 11:37:50 2022 From: jesse.vandesande at sydney.edu.au (Jesse Van de Sande) Date: Fri, 8 Apr 2022 01:37:50 +0000 Subject: [ASA] First Announcement: Linking the Galactic and Extragalactic 2022 Conference Message-ID: <12C5703E-238F-4618-8934-2BA1A5D62E9A@sydney.edu.au> Dear Colleagues, It is my pleasure to announce the in-person conference "Linking the Galactic and Extragalactic: stellar dynamics and stellar populations of the Milky Way and its siblings? to be held in Wollongong (NSW, Australia), November 28 - December 2, 2022. The registration and abstract submission page will open on the 1st of May 2022, with a deadline for contributed talk and poster abstracts on the 15th of June, 2022. Further details can be found at the conference website: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/FDwLCJyBrGf88okwxUV5U9Z?domain=extragalactic-milkyways.org Conference Rationale: Our Milky Way is by far the best? studied galaxy in the Universe, and it has long been regarded as a benchmark for understanding disk galaxies. We have made major leaps in our understanding of the Galaxy in the last few years, enabled by the ESA-Gaia mission along with several other spectroscopic Galactic surveys. However, the Milky Way is only one galaxy, and trying to understand the complex processes of galaxy formation and evolution from a single object is at best challenging, at worst naive and possibly flawed. In this conference we aim to link Galactic and Extragalactic research, both of which bring unique perspectives to understanding how disk galaxies formed. The recent wealth of detailed Milky Way measurements from the ESA-Gaia mission and Galactic archaeology surveys (e.g. GALAH, APOGEE, LAMOST), combined with results from spatially resolved spectroscopic surveys such as SAMI, MaNGA, and with VLT?-MUSE, make this the ideal time to link Galactic and extragalactic research. Crucial in this discussion are the recent results from large cosmological and Milky Way zoom-in simulations that show that the Galaxy might not be the ideal template for understanding disk formation as previously thought. The four key topics for the meeting will be the stellar dynamics and populations of the Milky Way and the stellar dynamics and populations of extragalactic galaxies, and an extra topic dedicated to comparing the different disciplines. COVID-19: One of the main goals for this conference is to build connections between the Galactic and Extragalactic community. The meeting will be talk? light, discussion heavy, and is therefore planned to be in-person. However, given the continuing uncertainty surrounding international travel due to COVID-19, there will be an option to attend parts of the meeting virtually. Please note that for contributed talks and posters, a preference will be given to speakers that can attend in-person, though we aim to facilitate a small fraction of the talks to be delivered in hybrid mode. We will provide childcare support to maximise participation of those with carer responsibilities and seek to accommodate those with other specific needs to enable their full participation in the meeting. We would appreciate if you can circulate this widely among your colleagues. Apologies if you receive this message more than once.
