J?rgen will be discussing the study he recently led in assessing the carbon footprint of astronomical research infrastructure, to appear in Nature Astronomy. This work builds on the momentum generated worldwide to push for the decarbonization of astronomical research, and we hope it is therefore of interest to each and every ASA member. All are welcome and encouraged to join. Please feel free to share with your department mailing lists for those who are not yet ASA members. The title and abstract for the talk and paper are below, as is information for the Zoom connection (or just use this link). We will endeavour to record the talk for those who cannot attend live. Best, - Adam (on behalf of the ASA Sustainability Working Group) Estimate of the carbon footprint of astronomical research infrastructures The carbon footprint of astronomical research is an increasingly topical issue with first estimates of research institute and national community footprints having recently been published. As these assessments have typically excluded the contribution of astronomical research infrastructures, we complement these studies by providing an estimate of the contribution of astronomical space missions and ground-based observatories using greenhouse gas emission factors that relate cost and payload mass to carbon footprint. We find that currently worldwide active astronomical research infrastructures have a carbon footprint of 20.3 +/- 3.3 Mt CO2e and an annual emission of 1169 +/- 249 kt CO2e/yr, corresponding to a footprint of 36.6 +/- 14.0 t CO2e / yr per astronomer. Compared to contributions from other aspects of astronomy research activity, our results suggest that research infrastructures make the single largest contribution to the carbon footprint of an astronomer. We discuss the limitations and uncertainties of our method, and explore measures that can bring greenhouse gas emissions from astronomical research infrastructures towards a sustainable level. Bio J?rgen studied at the TU Munich and MPE in Garching and then moved to IAP, Paris and subsequently IRAP, Toulouse. He has been a CNRS staff scientist since 2001. J?rgen works in the field of gamma-ray astronomy on data analysis and instrumentation, initially using COMPTEL and INTEGRAL/SPI on the topics of nucleosynthesis and antimatter, followed by Fermi and more recently CTA on the topics of cosmic-ray physics. He chaired the CTA consortium board for 9 years and recently stepped down to focus on sustainability issues in astronomy. J?rgen recently completed a training on carbon footprint analyses. Message-ID: The Australian Academy of Science has announced its Honorific Awardees for 2022 . Please join me in congratulating Keith Bannister on winning the 2022 Pawsey Medal . The citation reads: *Dr Keith Bannister is an exceptional scientist who has led several projects at the forefront of radio astronomy, especially in the area of fast radio burst (FRB) research. His great strength is that he has a deep understanding of both astronomy and radio-science engineering. These qualities enable him to envisage novel and powerful techniques to advance key science goals, to bring systems based on these techniques to fruition, and then to harvest the scientific returns. By exploiting the unique wide-field capabilities of CSIRO's ASKAP radio telescope, Dr Bannister and his team doubled the number of FRBs known at the time. He then went on to devise and implement a scheme to determine their precise sky positions, thereby identifying their source location in distant galaxies. These results provided vital clues on FRBs? astrophysical origin and also identified the location of 50 per cent of the missing baryons in the universe.* Congratulations Keith! The meeting will be held in hybrid mode. Participants can attend in person either at the host institution or at local hubs, or online via Zoom. Due to reduced hours to keep the meeting time-zone friendly, we expect that there will be less time available for talks. However, we would like to adhere to the tradition of ASMs which is to provide a forum for members to discuss important topic relevant for astronomy, to foster collaborations, promote ideas, and increase visibility of ECRs. To help us with the planning, we ask you to complete a mini-survey: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/-lkmCNLJyQU0O4Z5nHml1wl?domain=forms.office.com The survey will take approximately 1 minute of your time. Even if you do not plan to attend the ASM, please participate in the mini-survey. Please respond to this survey by Friday 18 March. Please note that the deadline for submitting abstracts is 27 March (https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/ILTrCOMKzVTp7WNrPFvqxzx?domain=asa2022.org), so if you're planning to present your research don't forget to send your abstract. For additional information please email the Local Organising Committee at info at asa2022.org or visit www.asa2022.org. > > BIO > > J?rgen studied at the TU Munich and MPE in Garching and then moved to IAP, Paris and subsequently IRAP, Toulouse. He has been a CNRS staff scientist since 2001. He chaired the CTA consortium board for 9 years and recently stepped down to focus on sustainability issues in astronomy. Numerous indicators flash danger warnings, yet most of academia, including UC, remains largely unengaged. Conceived of by two astronomers at UCSC and UCR, the Earth Futures Institute is the first institute of its kind to consider the prospects for intelligent life on Earth truly holistically on both near-term and cosmic timescales.
