Dear ASA,

Science meets Parliament (SMP) (https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/_tqdCnx1jni7DnVxRU9u7o_?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.org.au ) and the upcoming federal and state elections scheduled for next year provide a valuable opportunity for astronomers to lobby politicians for positive change in the sustainability front.

The ASA Sustainability Working Group is organizing an information event for Australian astronomers to help you get acquainted with basic principles in talking to and lobbying politicians. The event will take place on the 3rd of December from 4-5pm AEDT via zoom: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/rFOdCoV1kpfrYkm8yFzHLzz?domain=swinburne.zoom.us .

The workshop will start with a key-note talk by Michael Cornish under the title of “Lessons for Advocacy”. Michael is a public policy professional with specialist experience in economics, law, advocacy, and conflict management. He has worked in economic consultancy and international aid project management roles, as a policy advisor for a Federal Parliamentarian and lecturer in economics and social sciences. Michael has a passion for public service and the environment.

This will be followed up with a panel discussion focusing on two sides of the SMP events.

The panel will be formed of active astronomers with SMP experience. It will include Colin Jacobs, who was formerly the Director of Policy for the Australian Greens in the Federal Parliament; Natasha Hurley-Walker, who attended SMP remotely in 2021 as part of the Superstars of STEM programme; Sabine Bellstedt, who attended SMP in 2019 and 2021, and co-authored the 2019 analysis into Australian astronomy’s carbon emission; and Vanessa Moss, who attended SMP in 2016, is an executive member of the EMCR Forum and is working on exploring the future of meetings.

If you have specific questions about the event, please reach out to us.

Hope to see you there.

Clancy and Themiya,

on behalf of the ASA SWG
