From cfluke at swin.edu.au Tue Jul 27 13:36:09 2021 From: cfluke at swin.edu.au (Christopher Fluke) Date: Tue, 27 Jul 2021 03:36:09 +0000 Subject: [ASA] Call for Participants: Visual Discovery in Data-Intensive Disciplines In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Dear ASA Members, Second Call for Participants: Understanding and improving the process of visual discovery in data-intensive observational disciplines [Thank you to ASA Members who responded to our first Call for Participants ? we are very grateful for your time.] Researchers from Swinburne University of Technology are recruiting researchers and postgraduate students working in the broad fields of Astronomy and Earth Observation sciences. The purpose of the project is to gain understanding of the current work practices of researchers in these two data-intensive disciplines. In particular, the project aims to investigate the role of visual inspection of images in the two disciplines. This includes understanding experiences with formal and informal training in visual inspection of data, the extent to which visual inspection and/or automated solutions are used in current work activities, and the level of awareness and/or adoption of several categories of advanced image display technologies. Volunteers will be asked to complete an online survey, delivered through the Qualtrics Experience Management platform, which should take no more than 20 minutes to complete. Survey responses will be collected anonymously. However, participants may also agree to take part in a short interview (10 minutes) with the research team and/or register for a future planned technology demonstration. On providing such additional consent, you will be asked to identify yourself and provide an e-mail address to the research team. Prior to commencing the survey, we ask that you please read the Consent Information Statement, which is accessible from: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/Z4pTCvl1rKi7KjLnxCQDq5h?domain=tinyurl.com To access the survey please click on the link below or cut-and-paste the link into your Web browser: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/--XHCwV1vMfG9zVEKSqlzyC?domain=tinyurl.com This research has received ethics approval by or on behalf of Swinburne University of Technology's Human Research Ethics Committee. ESO has brought two matters to the STC's attention, which I think are important for some in the Australian community, regarding the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) submillimetre telescope (on the Chajnantor plateau) and the VLT Survey Telescope (VST, on Paranal). Currently, both telescopes are ESO facilities. However, access arrangements will likely change to both telescopes in the next 2 years: it is expected that they will transition to "hosted telescope" status, without formal open access to ESO members or Australia. Responsibility for these facilities will fall back on the non-ESO consortium members who built them originally: - APEX is expected to become a hosted telescope in 2023. Access beyond that time will have to be arranged through the non-ESO APEX consortium partners: the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy (MPIfR) and the Onsala Space Observatory (OSO). - VST is expected to become a hosted telescope next year (2022), with a firm date and on-going arrangements still under discussion. Access beyond 2022 will likely be by negotiation with the Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF) in Naples. Astronomy Australia Limited (AAL) has indicated that support for future access to these facilities may be considered as a "Tier 2" priority according to its NCRIS eligibility criteria: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/ktIgCP7LAXfKM3N3yuzw9bC?domain=astronomyaustralia.org.au So, if you would like to access these facilities in future, it will be best to: 1. Discuss your plans and requirements with any other potential APEX and/or VST users you know in the Australian community; and 2. Jointly contact Dr. Mita Brierley < mita.brierley at astronomyaustralia.org.au>, AAL's Chief Business Officer, about your collective plans and needs for future access. If you have questions about this, I would be happy to discuss them further, though there is limited information available at the moment. Best regards, Michael. -- Professor Michael T. NOTE - Only remote observations will be permitted in the short term due to COVID-19. WiFeS is the only instrument available (The Echelle and Imager have been decommissioned). Full instructions are available at https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/8JkPCBNqjlC7BZ265Hz078B?domain=rsaa.anu.edu.au. *************************** PLEASE NOTE *********************************** The ANU 2.3-metre telescope at Siding Spring Observatory is scientifically productive and a valuable resource for student training and instrument development. These diverse and significant benefits justify its continued operation for the foreseeable future. The full cost to the ANU Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) of operating the 2.3m telescope (including staff, maintenance and repairs) corresponds to approximately $1800 per night. To defray this cost, RSAA is offering priority on the 2.3m telescope to paying customers from Australia and elsewhere, while simultaneously ensuring a level of open access to astronomers at all Australian institutions. 60% of the telescope time will be allocated to paid priority proposals, which will need to contribute $900 per night towards the running costs of the telescope. The remaining 40% of the time is open-access and remains free. To be eligible to apply for open-access time, 50% or more of the proposers must be based at Australian institutions. In future years the price of a priority night will increase and the fraction of open-access nights will decrease. The UQ Astro group is now inviting expressions of interest from students who seek a PhD scholarship to commence in January 2022 (Research Quarter 1). Due to travel restrictions, the call is open to on-shore (domestic and international) students only. As a UQ Doctor of Philosophy (Astrophysics) candidate you will engage in original research, and be supervised by outstanding mentors, for the 3-4 year duration of your candidature. By the time of conferral, you will have developed independent research skills and made a significant contribution to the field of Astrophysics. Undertaking your PhD with the UQ Astrophysics team would allow you to become a part of our group of world-class researchers and teachers, innovative industry experts, and join the brightest students as part of our team to deliver impact both across Australia and on an international stage. UQ Astrophysics is embedded within the Discipline of Physics, which itself is part of the School of Mathematics and Physics in the Faculty of Science. Astronomical and Space Sciences are amongst the University of Queensland?s research strengths, consistently receiving the top rating of ?well-above international standard? in the Excellence in Research for Australia assessments. The astrophysics group has been rapidly expanding over the last few years, and have leadership roles in major international collaborations such as: ? The Dark Energy Survey and Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument, mapping the evolution of structures in our Universe over billions of years. ? The Gambit Collaboration, combining astronomy and particle physics to uncover the nature of dark matter and search for physics beyond the standard model. ? The SAMI survey, using detailed maps of how stars and gas move around inside distant galaxies to explore how they have formed and evolved. Our astrophysics staff have the reputation for being outstanding mentors and the impact of their guidance can be seen in in the outcomes for astrophysics PhD students who have gone on to successful careers doing postdoctoral research, lecturing, computer vision, and data science among a few. PhD students at UQ typically get access to major telescopes and supercomputing facilities, including from our own local remote observing facility, as well as significant travel funding. There are many opportunities to be involved in outreach and education initiatives. We welcome people from all backgrounds at UQ Astrophysics and we actively promote equal opportunity practices, diversity and inclusion across the School, as demonstrated by our Silver Pleiades award. If you would like further information please contact me or one of the other UQ Astro people.
