The UQ Astro group is now inviting expressions of interest from students who seek a PhD scholarship to commence in January 2022 (Research Quarter 1). Due to travel restrictions, the call is open to on-shore (domestic and international) students only. As a UQ Doctor of Philosophy (Astrophysics) candidate you will engage in original research, and be supervised by outstanding mentors, for the 3-4 year duration of your candidature. By the time of conferral, you will have developed independent research skills and made a significant contribution to the field of Astrophysics. Undertaking your PhD with the UQ Astrophysics team would allow you to become a part of our group of world-class researchers and teachers, innovative industry experts, and join the brightest students as part of our team to deliver impact both across Australia and on an international stage. UQ Astrophysics is embedded within the Discipline of Physics, which itself is part of the School of Mathematics and Physics in the Faculty of Science. Astronomical and Space Sciences are amongst the University of Queensland?s research strengths, consistently receiving the top rating of ?well-above international standard? in the Excellence in Research for Australia assessments. The astrophysics group has been rapidly expanding over the last few years, and have leadership roles in major international collaborations such as: ? The Dark Energy Survey and Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument, mapping the evolution of structures in our Universe over billions of years. ? The Gambit Collaboration, combining astronomy and particle physics to uncover the nature of dark matter and search for physics beyond the standard model. ? The SAMI survey, using detailed maps of how stars and gas move around inside distant galaxies to explore how they have formed and evolved. Our astrophysics staff have the reputation for being outstanding mentors and the impact of their guidance can be seen in in the outcomes for astrophysics PhD students who have gone on to successful careers doing postdoctoral research, lecturing, computer vision, and data science among a few. PhD students at UQ typically get access to major telescopes and supercomputing facilities, including from our own local remote observing facility, as well as significant travel funding. There are many opportunities to be involved in outreach and education initiatives. We welcome people from all backgrounds at UQ Astrophysics and we actively promote equal opportunity practices, diversity and inclusion across the School, as demonstrated by our Silver Pleiades award. If you would like further information please contact me or one of the other UQ Astro people. We received a limited number of EoIs, which we believe to be because many members were busy with Pleiades Awards applications. Now that the Pleiades Awards have been completed, we would like to re-open for EoI submissions. Ideally, we would like all Australian astronomy organisations to have a member on the committee. Thank you to those who have already submitted an EoI. We will further discuss the intention and importance of the committee at the upcoming IDEA Chapter Town Hall on Thurs. 15 July at 12:30pm AEST . Join the Community Action Committee! The ASA IDEA Chapter Steering Committee would like to issue a call for expressions of interest (EoIs) from all astronomical organisations across Australia. We ask that each organisation nominate one member (ideally from their EDI committee) to represent the organisation on the Community Action Committee. If you are not part of a relevant organisation, or would like to have more than one representative from the same organisation, please also submit an EoI and explain your interest in the Committee. The Community Action Committee will meet to determine and then work towards long-term goals for the entire Australian astronomical community, and facilitate broad communication throughout our national community and with the international community. We plan to seek guidance and direction from the First Nations Australian community, and will invite members to join the Committee if they wish. Our vision is that we all learn from each other?s successes and mistakes, share resources, and act on large-scale issues that individually we may not be able to address. *The EoI should answer the following questions and should be no longer than one page:* 1. Name of organisation 2. Name of nominated representative 3. Position of the representative within the organisation 4. Email of nominated representative 5. Is the nominated representative a member of the organisation?s EDI committee? If yes, for how long? 6. What does the organisation hope to gain from participating in the Community Action Committee? 7. Any additional information you would like to share *The EoI submissions should be emailed to asa.ideastronomy at gmail.com by 6 August 2021.* Best wishes, *The IDEA Chapter Steering Committee* asa-idea.org -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The hubs in Adelaide, Canberra, Melbourne, and Perth are proceeding in-person. Please double-check your hubs venues, as some have had to shift due to capacity restrictions. Unfortunately, the Brisbane and Sydney hubs have had to move to online-only. We will be automatically processing refunds for the registration differences at the canceled hubs after the event (you do not need to do anything now). Code of Conduct: Please take the time to familiarize yourself with the code of conduct and follow it throughout the meeting. Posters: Poster submissions are now up at this page . The videos will be added shortly. Take a look at the awesome submissions by your fellow conference goers. Talks: The talks begin at 9am AWST/11am AEST Monday. The full schedule can be browsed here (the schedule also has zoom links to each session for online participants) ? navigate to the appropriate days tab to see the talks for that day. Speakers should have already received information on logistics around computers and slides from their local hub. Slack: The preferred question channel during the conference is via slack. You can join the conference slack here . There are channels for each plenary and parallel session. You can also request IT support if needed in #technical-support . Coffee socials: We have scheduled glimpse video chats for the breaks without chapter meetings or other sessions. The icebreaker for Monday afternoon is ?What is your science??, and will pair Observers, Instrumentalists and Theorists. The session starts at 3:25pm AEST (1:25pm AWST). Cheers Christian (on behalf of the LOC) ???????????????????- -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:
