Dear Colleagues,

Please see below a call for expressions of interest in the Macquarie University Research Fellowship. There are ten University-wide 3-year fellowships available, commencing in 2022.

Applications follow a multi-stage process, starting with a brief expression of interest, due May 6th.

The Fellowship assessment panel will be advised by the Macquarie University Gender Equity Committee to consider issues of gender equity as part of their decision making, with the expectation that at least 40% of the 10 fellowship recipients who are funded by this scheme will be female, and at least 40% will be male.

Please see below for further details, and feel free to forward this information to potential candidates.

Best wishes,
Richard

Announcement
The Research Centre for Astronomy, Astrophysics and Astrophotonics at Macquarie University (MQAAAstro), Sydney, Australia invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a three-year independent Macquarie University Research Fellowship.

About MQAAAstro
MQAAAstro (https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/sbVvCzvkyVCMwPvlgT4jn40?domain=bit.ly) comprises research groups working in the areas of planet and star formation, stellar and binary evolution, Galactic archeology, the Galactic interstellar medium, galaxy formation and evolution, cosmology, and instrumentation. Macquarie hosts a new node of the ARC Centre of Excellence in All Sky Astrophysics in 3 Dimensions (ASTRO 3D), and enjoys strong links to the nearby CSIRO Astrophysics and Space Science division. Macquarie University also hosts a major node of the new national astronomy instrumentation capability, Australian Astronomical Optics (AAO), building instruments and data services for the world’s largest observatories.

Since 2012, MQAAAstro has consistently achieved the top ranking of ‘Well above world standard’ in the national assessment of astronomy research excellence (ERA). MQAAAstro is hosted within the Department of Physics and Astronomy, which holds a Silver Pleiades Award from the Inclusion, Diversity and Equity in Astronomy (IDEA) Chapter of the Astronomical Society of Australia, and has an active Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee (https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/1h6qCANpgjCNlmMy6c8-s1X?domain=bit.ly). Macquarie University itself is set in a pleasant lakeside campus on the edge of a National Park forest, just 30 minutes train-ride from the iconic centre of Sydney – a vibrant and culturally diverse city.

About the Fellowship
The purpose of the Macquarie University Research Fellowships (MQRF) Scheme is to support researchers within three years of the award of their PhD who have an outstanding track record (relative to opportunity) and/or who show evidence of excellent research potential. The Scheme provides an incubation period for early career researchers to allow them to increase their competitive edge in securing research funding from non-University sources, taking advantage of dedicated mentorship and support from the host department.

Up to ten University-wide Research Fellowships commencing in 2022 will be awarded on a competitive basis, and will be three years in duration. Gender equity is considered as part of the candidate assessment process, with the expectation that at least 40% of the 10 Fellowship recipients who are funded by this scheme will be female, and at least 40% will be male. The salary range for the Fellowship will be awarded at step 6, 7 or 8 of Level A of the Academic Salary Scale, plus annual leave loading and 17% employer superannuation. Supplementation by the host Department may be negotiated. The Fellowship also provides up to $50,000 for travel and equipment over its duration.

Position Eligibility
Applicants are eligible only if their PhD has been conferred on or after 1 March 2018 (exemptions can be requested), or their thesis will be submitted on or before 16 August 2021. At the time of applying for an Expression of Interest, applicants must have Australian Permanent Residency, Australian Citizenship or an existing entitlement to work in Australia for the duration of the fellowship (2022-2024) in order to be eligible to apply in 2021.

Application Process
Expressions of interests should be sent by email to kelly.sharpless at mq.edu.au<mailto:kelly.sharpless at mq.edu.au> by 6th May 2021, including a CV, one-page research interest statement with potential MQAAAstro sponsors identified, and cover letter. Following pre-selection (notification by 10th May), candidates will be mentored through the subsequent selection process, with a first stage expression of interest deadline of 19th May. Full applications will be required approximately 1 month later, with final outcomes expected by October.

For further enquiries, please contact kelly.sharpless at mq.edu.au<mailto:kelly.sharpless at mq.edu.au> (administrative queries) or richard.mcdermid at mq.edu.au<mailto:richard.mcdermid at mq.edu.au> (other enquiries about the Fellowship).
