Dear colleagues,

The Subaru Telescope and the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) were recently successful in getting 13.5M JPY (~ AU$160k) funding from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Core-to-Core research collaboration program for an “International research network toward the era of deep and wide near-infrared survey of the universe with space and ground-based telescopes”.

The network currently includes 113 investigators from Japan (47), France (11), USA (18), Australia (26) and Taiwan (11). The full list is provided in the attached proposal document (written in Japanese, but names and affiliations are listed in English). A brief overview of the program, including details about telescope time on the Subaru Telescope, the ESA Euclid mission, and the NASA Nancy Grace Roman Telescope, is also included in attachment.

Funding from the JSPS core-to-core grant will support travel costs for Japanese researchers travelling to visit non-Japanese collaborators associated with the program.

At this time there is an opportunity for Australia-based researchers who were not listed on the proposal to join the research network, and to be listed in the formal agreement that will be finalised soon. If you would like to be added to the list, you must be in a position to commit ~$7,500 AUD in travel funding to visit Japanese collaborators in Japan and/or Hawaii over the period April 2021-March 2026.

Should you wish to join the research network at this time, please complete the information requested below before Wednesday 10 March, 2021 11:59pm Canberra time.

Best regards,

Information required:

(1) Please provide the following details:
- First Name and Last Name
- Affiliation (Name of university or research organisation)
- Job title (Please include only one of the following choices: Professor; Associate/Assistant Professor or equivalent; Postdoc; PhD student; Other)
- Research field(s) (short description e.g. "high-redshift galaxies", "galaxy clusters", "adaptive optics", "instrumentation", "time domain astronomy”…)

(2) You must confirm that you agree and plan to spend on order $7,500 in travel funding to visit Japanese collaborators and/or participate in meetings/workshops/observations in Japan and/or Hawaii over the period April 2021-March 2026:
I agree/I do not agree

Notes:
(a) The $7,500 amount is indicative only, but needs to come from travel funding that you know you have or will have access to (any source including but not limited to ARC funding is acceptable)
(b) The $7,500 amount assumes no COVID-related travel restrictions. It is understood that you may not be able to travel as desired or as planned due to COVID-related travel restrictions, and this is OK. There will be no requirement to spend the full travel amount in these circumstances.
(c) There will be a requirement to report on actual travel and travel funding spent in the context of this program on an annual basis (reporting details to JSPS are as yet undefined but they are not expected to take too much of your time).

Thank you!
