Kind regards, Giacomo Beccari on behalf of the Office for Science, Directorate for Science, ESO ************************************************************************************ ESO is pleased to announce the beginning of the Hypatia Colloquium Series, where early career scientists will have the opportunity of describing their research to a very broad audience. The seminars were selected after a very competitiveprocess following the reception of over 300 proposals by ESO. The detailed programme of the seminars, which are scheduled to take place online on Tuesdays at 3pm (Central European Time), is now available. Each event foresees two 20min talks followed by questions and discussion. The seminars will be live-streamed on the dedicated YouTube page and will remain available on the same channel on a playlist. All astronomers areinvited to remotely attend the talks. The participation to the web events can be done in two ways: **Registered participant**: you can register using the dedicated Registration Form. Registered participants will be able to attend the seminars and interact with the speakers via a Zoom meeting. You can choose to participate in a selection of events or to all. Registered participants will receive instructions on how to connect to the Zoom event 1 hr before the beginning of the talks. The number of registered participants is limited to 100 per event. **YouTube attendees**: everyone can attend the live events on the dedicated YouTube page. All YouTube attendees will be able to make questions during the live event using a dedicated chat. The training session will be conducted via Zoom on Thursday January 28 between 12-1pm. It is targeted at users with little to no experience with cloud computing. It will involve: - a general introduction to cloud computing and OpenStack; - a demonstration on setting up a simple virtual machine (VM); - a brief overview of some other possible, more advanced, workflows, and; - time for questions. The resources available for dedicated astronomy use consist of 2,000 virtual CPUs, with attachable volume storage and advanced networking (e.g. DNS zones, floating IP addresses, virtual routers), utilised via the OpenStack cloud computing platform. VMs can be provisioned in a variety of different 'flavours' to accommodate a broad spectrum of workflows. Single VMs will typically comprise up to 8 or 16 virtual CPUs and 16 or 32 GB RAM (although larger sizes are possible upon request). It is envisaged that these resources will be of interest to small-job use cases that do not require the full blown infrastructure of a high-performance computing (HPC) facility and/or will benefit from the flexibility of working outside of a HPC environment. However, there is currently no restriction on use case and we are keen to see how this resource can be of benefit to a variety of astronomy workflows. This tutorial will be an opportunity for you to find out if cloud computing suits your needs. To register your interest please send an email to > noting your name and institution. Details for connecting to the event will be sent to those who have registered prior to the date. Regards, David Liptai & Jarrod Hurley This event is provided by Astronomy Data and Computing Services (ADACS). ADACS is a collaboration between Swinburne University of Technology and Curtin University. It is funded under the Astronomy National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) Program via Astronomy Australia Ltd (AAL). -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This has raised a lot of interest, with ~150 registrations, but Australia is still under-represent. Could you please circulate the announcement below in your community? Thanks a lot! Best, Paulo Dear colleagues, It is our pleasure to invite you to a virtual community workshop on the planned GRAVITY+ instrument upgrade. The workshop will take place on Zoom on two half-days on 24 - 25 February 2021. GRAVITY+ is the first new Very Large Telescope (VLT) instrument selected following the ?ESO in the 2030s? review. It will increase the sensitivity, sky coverage, and field of view of the VLT Interferometer (VLTI) to enable milliarcsecond imaging and microarcsecond astrometry in the infrared for a wide new range of Galactic and extragalactic science cases. GRAVITY+ constitutes a phased upgrade of the current, enormously successful GRAVITY instrument. With a final capability of fringe tracking down to K~15 mag, off-axis targets down to K~22 mag will be observable. By opening this new discovery space, the VLTI will become of broad interest to the European science community beyond the classical interferometry fields. The aim of the community workshop is to present the instrument to potential future users, highlight the major science cases, and present new ideas from the community on the use of the instrument. This ranges from the Galactic Centre, active galactic nuclei, supermassive black hole binaries, tidal disruption event and intermediate mass black holes to the characterisation of exoplanets, young and old stars, and microlenses. We aim for a wide participation of the ESO user base from Australia to Chile with one European afternoon session (24 February; Galactic science) and one morning session (25 February; Extragalactic science). Please register free of charge by 8 February 2021 using the Registration form. There are also a limited number of time slots available for new ideas for GRAVITY+ science from the community, so please also consider submitting an abstract. We look forward to welcoming you to the workshop! With best wishes, Laura Kreidberg and Seb Hoenig, on behalf of the SOC -- Paulo J. V.
