From Cathryn.Trott at curtin.edu.au Mon Sep 21 09:50:06 2020 From: Cathryn.Trott at curtin.edu.au (Cathryn Trott) Date: Sun, 20 Sep 2020 23:50:06 +0000 Subject: [ASA] Vale AR (Harry) Hyland Message-ID: Dear ASA Members, It is with sadness that I announce the passing of Professor A.R. (Harry) Hyland. Harry pioneered the early days of mid-infrared astronomy in Australia using single-element bolometers, with studies of sources local to the Galaxy, in the local group, and beyond to QSOs. His most recent appointment was as Deputy Vice-Chancellor of James Cook University. Harry served for 14 years on ASA Council and was a former President of the Society (1993-94). His service was recognised through an Honorary Fellowship of the ASA. He was also co-Chair of the National Organising Committee for the IAU GA in 2003 in Sydney. Attached is a photo from the IAU GA, with Harry on the right, standing next to Ron Ekers (incoming IAU President), and including the outgoing IAU President and Australian Chief Scientist. Harry?s funeral will be held this week in Ourimbah on the NSW Central Coast. We have put together a video for tomorrow's Global Day of Climate Action (Vimeo [2]/YouTube [3]), which you are welcome to share (widely!) if you are interested We also wanted to let you know that we are running a webinar series. This was established by Travis Rector at the University of Alaska, Anchorage, who you might recall gave a Zoom talk via the ASA about a year ago on educating the public about climate change through astronomy. The first webinar is available to stream on YouTube [4] right now. This is a meta-talk given by astrobiologist David Grinspoon aimed at professional astronomers on "Communicating about climate change through comparative planetology". You're welcome to share this link with colleagues, but it's not intended for the general public (the video is intentionally unlisted to avoid trolling). There is also a live Q&A set up between Travis and David, and any questions dropped in the YouTube comments will be addressed then. Unfortunately, time zones mean that Q&A session will be in the middle of the night Australian time (tomorrow night / Saturday morning), but it might be recorded. The second webinar will become available on October 9th. The project aims to explore a unique niche in exoplanet detection: searches for cold planets down to Earth mass, including ice giants, rogue free-floating planets, and those with ?dark? hosts (e.g., degenerate objects). Discovering these planets and learning whether their frequency varies with location in the Galaxy can only be done with gravitational microlensing experiments and follow-up high angular resolution observations. The project involves modelling and observational components, with local, international, and space telescopes. We have strong links with other disciplines including Mathematics and Spatial Sciences.
