From Paul.Francis at anu.edu.au Mon Aug 3 14:06:42 2020 From: Paul.Francis at anu.edu.au (Paul Francis) Date: Mon, 3 Aug 2020 04:06:42 +0000 Subject: [ASA] Call for SSO 2.3m applications Message-ID: <57E30096-D8BC-44BF-B851-545BA936E0AB@anu.edu.au> Dear Observer, The closing date for observing proposals for time on the ANU/RSAA 2.3m telescope at Siding Spring Observatory (SSO) in the quarter 1st November 2020 - 31st January 2021 is 23:59 August 15, 2020. NOTE - Only remote observations will be permitted in the short term due to COVID-19. WiFeS is the only instrument available (The Echelle and Imager have been decommissioned). Observing proposals must be submitted electronically via the RSAA web pages. Full instructions are available at https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/RhN2CGv0oyCm8LMBCKkbbU?domain=rsaa.anu.edu.au. *************************** PLEASE NOTE *********************************** The ANU 2.3-metre telescope at Siding Spring Observatory is scientifically productive and a valuable resource for student training and instrument development. These diverse and significant benefits justify its continued operation for the foreseeable future. The full cost to the ANU Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) of operating the 2.3m telescope (including staff, maintenance and repairs) corresponds to approximately $1800 per night. To defray this cost, RSAA is offering priority on the 2.3m telescope to paying customers from Australia and elsewhere, while simultaneously ensuring a level of open access to astronomers at all Australian institutions. 60% of the telescope time will be allocated to paid priority proposals, which will need to contribute $900 per night towards the running costs of the telescope. The remaining 40% of the time is open-access and remains free. To be eligible to apply for open-access time, 50% or more of the proposers must be based at Australian institutions. In future years the price of a priority night will increase and the fraction of open-access nights will decrease. Full details can be found at https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/TDcTCJyBrGfRnQYBiG6BTO?domain=rsaa.anu.edu.au The latest information on using the telescope and its instruments can be found at http://https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/KV2ZCK1DvKTl1rnDI3lk0W?domain=rsaa.anu.edu.au *************************************************************************** If you have questions or technical problems in using the web-based submission process, please email tacinfo at mso.anu.edu.au. Although in some of the ALMA regions the situation is slowly improving, in other regions, including Chile, the evolution of the outbreak remains highly uncertain. Because of the on-going situation in Chile, ALMA operations unfortunately remain suspended. ALMA staff continue to monitor the situation very carefully and work on the development of detailed plans for the return to operations, which will be initiated when the situation allows. ALMA will keep updating the user community on the developments. This workshop aims to bring together the experts in the field to review the science highlights from various thermal infrared instruments, from protoplanetary discs to active galactic nuclei. Some future facilities will be reviewed, and techniques and approaches for observations and calibrations will be compared, with the aim to reach the theoretical limit, the background-limited performance. This conference was originally planed for earlier this year and had to be postponed due to the Covid crisis. It will now be held online on 12-16 October. Participation is free of charge and all sessions will be recorded. Please see the conference webpage for more information. ESO is studying a variety of measures to complete those programmes at the earliest possible time once operations are resumed, which may require the exceptional suspension of the Call for Proposals for Period 107 (April-October 2021). While the decision is not firm yet, researchers preparing or planning to submit proposals for Period 107 should take into account that such suspension is a real possibility. The instrument is located at the VLT UT1 telescope and has 24 image slicer Integral Field Units (IFUs) that can be placed independently in the patrol field of 7.2 arcmin diameter. Each IFU has 14 slices with 14 spatial pixels along each slice and a field-of-view of 2.8x2.8 arcsec2 which gives a spatial resolution of 0.2 arcsec. Spectral resolving power depends on the grating and is between 2000 and 4200. This initial release consists of observations from October 2013 (i.e. start of operations) until February 2020. Some future facilities will be reviewed, and techniques and approaches for observations and calibrations will be compared, with the aim to reach the theoretical limit, the background-limited performance. * UVES2020 Online, 21-22 October 2020 This virtual workshop intends to celebrate 20 years of great UVES science and envision the future role of the instrument. Ten prominent scientists will resume the history of UVES, outline the scientific highlights of its long career and offer their insights on how to best equip it to help tackle the scientific questions of the next decade. A final discussion session will address the possible future instrumental upgrades, to balance technical constraints with scientific needs, and help to define a set of compelling science cases. * Five years after HL Tau: a new era in planet formation (HLTAU2020) Online, 7-11 December 2020 This ESO/NRAO workshop aims to discuss the emerging new paradigm of planet formation. The program will offer a broad view of the field, covering from the early stages of disks still embedded in their parental envelope to the times when full planetary systems are formed and only a few remnants of the progenitor disk are left. It will also explore the future of planet formation studies, as well as the impact and potential of upcoming instrumentation and telescopes (e.g. ngVLA. E-ELT, SKA, JWST). With this workshop, we aim at creating a more unified view of the exciting discoveries that have taken place in recent years. * NYRIA Workshop 2020 Online, 26-30 October 2020 The Network for Young Researchers in Instrumentation for Astrophysics (NYRIA) is organising its 4th annual workshop from 26th - 30th October 2020. The workshop is aimed for early career researchers, i.e. final year Bachelor students, Masters students, PhD students and post-doctoral researchers, working in ground based, visible and infrared instrumentation for astronomy. * The Binary Effect on Stellar Wind (BINAGB2020) La Serena, Chile, 30 November - 4 December 2020 The aim of this workshop is to bring together the community of observers and theoreticians working on single and binary evolved stars. The workshop will concentrate on the effects of binaries on AGB stellar evolution. At this mass range, such effects are known but have so far often been neglected. However, contributions on this science scheme related to other evolved stars, such as red supergiants, will be considered as well. ________________________________ Pitch your research for an ESO Press Release for a chance to make the news. We will go through several different use cases, from the web user-interface to scripted access/download with Virtual Observatory tools. The intended audience: ? astronomers of all levels, from students to more experienced astronomers, and ? anyone interested in accessing ASKAP data, not just radio astronomers or ASKAP Survey Science team members. The 1 hour interactive tutorial is planned for the week of Sep 7. Following the Special Announcement issued on 24 July and the finalization of the time allocation process for Period 106 (October 2020-March 2021), ESO has completed an in-depth analysis of the detrimental effects that the loss of the observing time will have on the commitments made for Large Programmes and other high-priority programmes in both Periods 105 and 106, its foreseen impact on the science time expected to be available in the forthcoming Period 106, and the amount of time that will be required for technical work to be rescheduled once the observatory resumes normal operations. The conclusions of this analysis clearly show that the time available for new programmes in Period 107 will be extremely reduced with respect to previous periods. For this reason the ESO Director General, following discussions with the Council President, the Chair of the Scientific and Technical Committee, and the Chair of the Users Committee, has confirmed the decision to suspend the Call for Proposals for Period 107.
