The report has been prepared by the Mid-Term Review Committee, overseen by the National Committee for Astronomy of the Australian Academy of Science. Feedback may be submitted to the review committee via online form on the review website or by email to nc at science.org.au before 4.00 pm AEST Friday 29 May. The final report will be launched virtually at the ASA Annual Scientific Meeting on Wednesday 8 July. The draft report, background papers and review information may be downloaded from www.science.org.au/astronomy-midterm Since the last update to the ASA, four additional white papers have been prepared and uploaded to the website: * Data science and astronomy: careers and pathways * Demographics * Diversity * Carbon emissions in astronomy For any questions relating to the review please contact the chair of the review committee and the National Committee for Astronomy, Professor Lister Staveley-Smith. They welcome the input of scientists from overseas as well - see below for the link: ************************* Dear IAQ collaborators - The Royal Astronomical Society's Committee for Diversity in Astronomy & Geophysics - of which I'm a member - is conducting a large-scale survey on harassment and bullying within astronomy, space science and geophysics. Having witnessed more than a few instances of unacceptable behaviour within our community and academia more broadly, this is certainly a topic about which I feel quite strongly. If you think you might have 5-10 mins to spare, I'd be grateful if you could fill out the anonymous survey and/or pass it on to any of your astro colleagues (USA, Australia, Canada, doesn't matter - no need to be a Royal Astronomical Society Fellow) who might be in a position to complete it. The next event will take place Monday 25 May at 11:00 CEST (please note the change of time) and will consist of a duologue about: Initial Mass Function: Universal...or Not? Speakers: Tereza Jerabkova (IAC/GTC, La Palma, Spain and Bonn University) and Andrew Hopkins (AAO Macquarie - Macquarie University, Australia) Moderator: Giacomo Beccari (ESO) Please see the event webpage for more details of the event. The scientific community is invited to remotely attend the talks The event will be live streamed on this YouTube page: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/Ww57Cnx1jniQ37p0uNw_DV?domain=youtu.be. Proposals can be submitted for observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), Parkes 64-m telescope, Tidbinbilla 70-m and 34-m antennas, and the Long Baseline Array (VLBI). The deadline for all proposals is 07:00 UT (17:00 AEST), Tuesday 16 June 2020. Proposals must be submitted using the online proposal application system, OPAL (https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/t_LCCxngwOfKGqzKH84qJF?domain=opal.atnf.csiro.au). Important information on the current status of ATNF telescopes is provided at https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/Z0S2CyojxQTEjmpECMSONP?domain=atnf.csiro.au. A section at the top of this webpage notes some important changes for the 2020OCT semester. This includes a proposed rationalisation of the Parkes receiver fleet and decommissioning of the 20cm multi-beam receiver in the coming semester. Information is also provided on observing in the COVID-19 era. Note that OPAL will now, in generating the full proposal, list an abbreviated version of the proposal team at the end of the proposal as part of a trial to reduce unconscious bias during the review process.
