From caroline.foster at sydney.edu.au Tue May 5 09:20:44 2020 From: caroline.foster at sydney.edu.au (Caroline Foster) Date: Mon, 4 May 2020 23:20:44 +0000 Subject: [ASA] Call for ESO-OPC Nominations - deadline 1 June References: Message-ID: Good morning fellow astronomers, Please forward the following to relevant people within and beyond your institute. As the ESO Users Committee representative, it is my role to nominate suitable and willing Australian astronomers to serve as referees on the European Southern Observatory Observing Programme Committee (OPC, or ESO?s TAC). ESO has now issued its bi-annual call for nominees, with a deadline of 1 June to be considered for serving in periods P107-P108 (panel members) or P107-P110 (OPC panel chairs). While Australia has a very broad representation on the various panels, there is a clear dearth of certain demographics and scientific expertise. ESO has kindly provided the attached statistics table, although I note that this table is not entirely up to date as a total of 7 people (only 1 female) have since been nominated. In particular, ESO is asking for more (senior) female nominees and nominees with research expertise in category C to help balance Australia?s representation on the various panels. I note that both observers and theorists may serve on the OPC. The terms of reference and rules of procedures for the OPC are available here. The OPC meets twice a year (usually in Garching, Germany, but probably virtually for the foreseeable future). Travel, if applicable, is at ESO?s expense. Selected panel and committee members will need to carefully review several tens of proposals each and grade around 100 proposals at the meeting based on discussion. Serving on the OPC represents a significant amount of work and time. For this reason, people typically serve on the OPC for only 2 consecutive periods (1 year, so P107-P108), although more senior astronomers may be asked to serve for 2 years (P107-P110) as panel chairs. If you/someone you know are/is qualified and available to serve on the OPC (ESO requests for 2nd postdoc of beyond), please contact me directly. Be sure to include in your email the OPC subcategory. Additionally, ORCID, experience on ESO telescopes and the year of PhD award may optionally be included with the nomination (recommended). If you have been nominated recently, but haven?t been contacted by ESO yet, know that your name does stay in the current system indefinitely. While I may not remove names, I may update past nominations. If you are unsure, I am quite happy to check the database for your name. It is in Australia?s best interest to have as many Australian astronomers on the various OPC panels, which cover a range of science topics. I am looking for a diverse (particularly in gender, expertise and seniority) pool of Australian astronomers who are in their second postdoc or beyond to nominate. Clear Skies! STA represents scientists working across academia, industry and government, and plays a key role in driving science policy in Australia. I invite you to participate in their short survey, the details of which are below. Regards, Cathryn https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/sYfZCANpgjCB6JM9UG9_MM?domain=scienceandtechnologyaustralia.org.au Professionals Australia and Science & Technology Australia invite you to participate in the annual Professional Scientist Employment and Remuneration Survey. Through this survey, you will contribute to the most comprehensive benchmark report of scientist remuneration and employment conditions in Australia. The survey will also provide important insights into the unprecedented impact that COVID19 has had on Australia?s scientific workforce. Your responses will provide an important glimpse into Australia?s science sector which, in turn, will help us advocate with and for this sector to Government, policymakers and the Australian public. The more scientists who participate, the more comprehensive and meaningful these results will be. What do people need to know? * The survey takes 10-15 minutes to complete. * It is entirely anonymous. * It is open to all science professionals in Australia. * All survey participants can enter the draw to win one of two $500 JB HiFi vouchers. * The survey closes on 24 May 2020. Take the survey _______________________________________________________ Cathryn Trott Associate Professor ARC Future Fellow President, Astronomical Society of Australia ARC Centre of Excellence for All Sky Astrophysics in 3D (ASTRO 3D) International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research Curtin University Bentley WA, Australia cathryn.trott at curtin.edu.au -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The Berenice Page Medal was inaugurated by the Astronomical Society of Australia in 1972 in memory of Mrs Berenice Page, an exceptional amateur astronomer and foundation member of the Society. Although amateur astronomers, Berenice and her husband Arthur, were readily accepted into the Society because of the indispensable part they played in the IAU Flare Star Programme in the 1960's. Arthur Page remained an ASA member until his death in 2011 and, with his family's agreement, the Society renamed the medal as the Berenice and Arthur Page Medal. The medal is generally awarded biennially for scientific contributions by an amateur astronomer that has served to advance astronomy. TG designed, built and operates the Perth Exoplanet Survey Telescope Observatory, which co-discovered nearly 50 exoplanets, including one potentially habitable planet. TG is a member of the Follow-up Observing Program for NASA?s TESS mission working to confirm TESS planet candidates. He has collaborated and published with many of the world?s professional exoplanet search teams. He has been a co-author on more than 65 papers in prestigious journals including Nature, Science, The Astrophysical Journal, Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society and The Astronomical Journal. Tan has developed novel observing and analysis techniques that he has shared freely with the amateur astronomy community. The successful candidate will characterise stellar surface variability and measure the alignment between exoplanetary orbits and their host stars rotational spin-axis. The candidate will utilise the ?reloaded RM? approach to determine such alignments and probe planet migration and evolution. In doing so, they will also spatially resolve distant stars, investigate stellar surface variability, determine stellar differential rotation across main sequence stars, and validate state-of-the-art stellar simulations. The Astrophysics group at Warwick is one of the UK's leading exoplanet research groups (with close ties to their Plasma Physics group), and provides an excellent environment for a motivated Research Fellow to further their scientific career. Some of the post holders time may be available for their own independent research, preferably in the area of exoplanets or stellar/solar physics within the Physics Department at Warwick. The University of Warwick strongly values equity, diversity and inclusion, and the Physics Department will provide a healthy working environment, dedicated to outstanding scientific guidance, mentorship and personal development. We are committed to individuals with care giving duties and can offer flexible working hours. Applications for a part-time position will be considered. Applications should include: a completed application form (including contact details for three references), a brief statement of research interests, CV including publications, a statement on commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion. Deadline for applications is 23:59 GMT, 3 July 2020. The anticipated start date is September/October 2020, but this is flexible.
