A reminder for Lisa?s Zoom colloquium tomorrow; details below. Even though this is an ASTRO 3D event, we encourage all in our community to join. Please note the starting time of 2PM (AEST), not 1PM listed on the ASA events calendar. See you then! Darren On 6 Apr 2020, at 4:02 pm, Darren Croton > wrote: Dear ASTRO 3D members. Please join us for our next A3D Zoom colloquium at 2PM Tuesday 21st April. Mark your calendars! This month we have our Director, Professor Lisa Kewley speaking from ANU. Aside from leading a large team of incredibly talented researchers, technical and admin staff, Lisa is a world-leading expert in the theoretical modelling and observation of star-forming and active galaxies. Her recent research combines stellar evolution and photoionisation models with cosmological hydrodynamic simulations to predict how the ionising radiation in galaxies changes over time. See below for the talk and dial-in details. All talks are 25+5min. Please connect with both your video and audio OFF. Please try and limit questions to after the talk. If you?ve never used Zoom before you?ll need to install some software; you?ll be prompted when you click the link, so best to get that set up beforehand. Thanks, and see you on the 21st! Darren --------------------------------------------- WHEN: Tuesday 21st April 2PM (AEST) SPEAKER: Lisa Kewley (ANU) TITLE & ABSTRACT: Closing the gap: full workforce gender modelling for STEM in Australia The fraction of women at the higher levels in Australian STEM remains at 20-30%, despite having achieved parity at level A (junior postdoc) for nearly two decades. I present an evidence-based Monte Carlo model that can reproduce the current gender disparity at all levels in Australian science, starting with the 2002 data. I show that either a small 2-3% implicit bias in recruitment and/or double the number of departures from women at levels A-B can explain the current gender gap. To provide institutions with guidance in closing the gap, I run my models forward in time, while including various initiatives, such as 50:50 hiring, a goal of 50:50 departures, and equal retirements. I show that the current gender gap for levels B-E in Australian STEM in academia can be closed within 12-15 years with the implementation of reasonable and fair initiatives. These results have important implications for future workforce planning at institutions worldwide. --------------------------------------------- ZOOM DETAILS Join from a PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone or Android device: Please click this URL to start or join: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/4paOCYW8NocgM6rZi0Q_gb?domain=swinburne.zoom.us Password: 064047 Join from dial-in phone line: Dial: +61 2 8015 2088 Meeting ID: 210 757 955 International numbers available: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/pFEyCZY1NqixloJRFjmiJ9?domain=swinburne.zoom.us Join from a H.323/SIP room system: Dial: 61262227588 or SIP:7588 at aarnet.edu.au or H323: 210 757 955 at 182.255.112.21 (From Cisco) or H323:182.255.112.21## 210 757 955 (From Huawei, LifeSize, Polycom) or 202.158.223.142 or 162.255.37.11 (U.S.) Meeting ID: 210 757 955 H323/SIP Password: 064047 --------------------------------------------- -- Darren Croton Professor of Astrophysics Centre for Astrophysics & Supercomputing Swinburne University of Technology PO Box 218, Hawthorn, VIC 3122, Australia Phone: 61-3-9214-5537; Fax: 61-3-9214-8797 https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/krOmC1WLPxcO3EVmCpHwAO?domain=astronomy.swin.edu.au -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Could you please forward this to any suitable candidates? Requests for further information can be sent to Prof. Juan Francisco Salazar on J.Salazar at westernsydney.edu.au Many thanks Ray The project is funded through the Australian Research Council and investigates the challenges, opportunities and implications of outer space as a site of economic, political, environmental and cultural interest. Combining ethnography, science and technology studies, and creative practice, the project analyses how a range of imaginaries of outer space are produced through a series of case studies including: the development of Australia?s National Space Agency; the role of new venture capital firms; scientific research on alien life in terrestrial analogue sites; and Indigenous imaginaries of outer space. The scholarship is explicitly designed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants from a range of backgrounds, who are keen to apply their knowledge and critical approaches to social studies of outer space and connecting science, storytelling and Indigenous science. The research topics are open, but the project is suitable for candidates who might be interested in questions of decolonization (of space imaginaries); environmental justice; Indigenous representation in the astronomical and space sciences in Australia; Aboriginal astronomical knowledge traditions and practices; science communication; among other possible topics. This is particularly unfortunate for students and ECRs. It also has removed the normal vehicle the ASA would use to hold its Annual General Meeting, and to have the ASA Prize Winners be able to present their work. As such, we are polling the community about the running of a virtual mini-Annual Science Meeting, in the same week in which APRIM was to be held (July 6). The meeting would contain the AGM and Prize Talks, and presentations will be limited to students and ECRs who submitted abstracts to speak at APRIM. The poll includes questions about attendance, as well as asking students and ECRs whether they would be interested in presenting their APRIM work. Depending on interest, an SOC may be formed to prioritise talks. We have also provided three options for timing, to fit with schedules and timezones as best as possible: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/GX69CP7LAXfJvA3Wfzy2d_?domain=forms.gle If you could please fill the poll by COB AEST Friday May 1, after which ASA Council will make decisions about the running of the event. The platform for the virtual meeting has yet to be decided.
