Rachel was awarded "For distinguished service to education in the field of astrophysics, to astronomical research, and to young women scientists." Rachel has been a long supporter of the ASA, of astronomy in Australia, and women in science, and has made major impacts in many diverse fields of astronomy. She has also trained and mentored many of today's research leaders. I am particularly proud because Rachel was my PhD supervisor and has been a mentor to me for 20 years. NOTE - All proposers need to tell us whether they plan to observe in person or remotely, and whether they are requesting paid or unpaid nights. Proposals with these fields left blank will be discarded. Instruments available: Nasymth A: WiFeS Nasymth B: Imager or Echelle. Observing proposals must be submitted electronically via the RSAA web pages. Full instructions are available at https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/7iHBCQnzP0twyOn7FxEojT?domain=rsaa.anu.edu.au. *************************** PLEASE NOTE *********************************** The ANU 2.3-metre telescope at Siding Spring Observatory is scientifically productive and a valuable resource for student training and instrument development. These diverse and significant benefits justify its continued operation for the foreseeable future. The full cost to the ANU Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) of operating the 2.3m telescope (including staff, maintenance and repairs) corresponds to approximately $1800 per night. To defray this cost, RSAA is offering priority on the 2.3m telescope to paying customers from Australia and elsewhere, while simultaneously ensuring a level of open access to astronomers at all Australian institutions. 60% of the telescope time will be allocated to paid priority proposals, which will need to contribute $900 per night towards the running costs of the telescope. The remaining 40% of the time is open-access and remains free. To be eligible to apply for open-access time, 50% or more of the proposers must be based at Australian institutions. In future years the price of a priority night will increase and the fraction of open-access nights will decrease. For more information on this please follow this link. The NCA is seeking images to include in the review document. In particular, we are looking to include images that show Australian astronomers doing Australian astronomy and would like to source these from the ASA community. Your contributions would be very welcome and much appreciated. The images will need to be publication-quality, with a short description, a credit line and information of the status of permission from the owner of the image. For some inspiration, the images can highlight Australian astronomy: telescopes, instrumentation, computing/data, astrophysics, people, industry engagement, education and training. Please upload images along with the necessary information to this page by the end of February 2020. We look forward to viewing your submissions. Yours Scientifically, Sara Hughes. As a result of Australia's Strategic Partnership with ESO, students who are Australian citizens are eligible to apply for this program, and will have all their costs met by ESO. In 2019 Matthew Wilkinson from the University of Queensland was one of the 7 students selected, and outlined his experiences in an AAL ESO Blog post . Please note that applications close on Wednesday 5th February. Stuart Ryder, AAL Stuart.Ryder at astronomyaustralia.org.au ESO Summer Research Programme Garching, Germany 2nd July - 11th August 2020 Application Deadline ( instructions): 5th February 2020 For six weeks in the summer of 2020, ESO will host the second Summer Research Programme. This fully-funded programme is an opportunity for university students interested in astronomy/astrophysics, who are not yet enrolled in a PhD programme, to obtain research experience alongside astronomers based at ESO Headquarters (HQ) in Garching, Germany. We will accept applications from promising university students from any country, although priority will be given to students from ESO Member States , Strategic Partners (Australia) and the Host State (Chile). The Summer Research Program at ESO is an exceptional opportunity for students to work at an institute that is both the headquarters of the most productive observatory in the world and a top-class research organisation. People at ESO's HQ maintain a very active research community and are also designing and operating cutting-edge telescopes and their instruments including the VLT , ALMA , and the forthcoming ELT , which will be the world's biggest optical-near infrared telescope! The participants can choose between a wide range of research projects , covering many areas of astronomy from exoplanets to cosmology. The ESO Summer Research Programme will also provide opportunities beyond research, including lectures, a mini-workshop, and many social activities. You should expect six weeks packed with new experiences, new networks and new friendships! Travel costs to/from Garching will be covered for participants of the programme. Accommodation will be provided free of charge in a shared apartment in Garching (with electricity, heating and internet all included). Students will also be provided with a modest stipend to cover living costs during the programme. Successful students have the responsibility to acquire any required visas to spend six weeks working in Germany under these conditions. For inquiries about the programme, please email summerresearch at eso.org . An ESO Blog article on the 2019 edition of the Summer Research Programme can be found here . -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Dick was a very well-loved and well-respected member of the community for many years. He also served, and was honoured by, the ASA, including being the 3rd Ellery Lecturer in 1995, Editor of PASA from 1989-1991, and served as an ASA Council member from 1991-1993. In addition, Dick joined the ASA as a student member in 1966, the Society's inaugural year. Dick has many enduring legacies, but his commitment to training and inspiring the younger generation of astronomers is a role in which many of us knew him. He was the former head of the Sydney Institute for Astronomy (SIfA) and the Director of MOST. Scientifically, he had significant contributions to the fields of quasars, galaxies and the Lyman-alpha Forest. There will be a celebration of Dick?s achievements, scheduled for Friday 14 February. The booking link is: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/yn3ECvl0PoC7jyQlDHQhr2t?domain=eventbrite.com.au This was an event that was already organised to occur, and so the program and venue may need adjusting. I have also attached some words about Dick, prepared by his colleagues in the School of Physics. Our thoughts are with friends and family of Dick in this difficult time.
