Dear ASA members,

Many of you would have already heard that the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) is holding its Scientific Assembly in Australia next year - the first time ever it will be held here.

What many of you may not realise is that there is a very significant astrophysics component to these meetings. Of the 8 Scientific Commissions, commission E is solely astrophysics, and commissions B, C, E and H have significant astrophysics components.

In my own fields of interest, scientific have the following joint scientific events (i.e. conferences within the assembly):

- Unifying Planetary System Formation out of Elementary Building Blocks: from Dust, Gas and Ice to our Solar System and Exoplanets
- Current and Future Projects for Exoplanet Detections and Characterization
- The Study of Exoplanet Atmospheres and the Search for Life Outside of the Solar System

As an SOC member on two of these events, I can confirm that there are many top international invited speakers secured. The dates are August 15-22 next year, with abstracts due in February.

This is a really fantastic conference for both advancing each of our own specialised sub-fields, while also learning a lot about space research (and research from space). It is both a unique opportunity to attend a major international conference with low carbon footprint, and showcase the world leading research being conducted from Australia. I hope to see many of you there!

Regards,

Mike.
