From Cathryn.Trott at curtin.edu.au Mon Dec 2 18:46:19 2019 From: Cathryn.Trott at curtin.edu.au (Cathryn Trott) Date: Mon, 2 Dec 2019 07:46:19 +0000 Subject: [ASA] Call for submission of bids to host 2021 ASA Annual Scientific Meeting and HWSA Message-ID: Dear ASA Members, The ASA Council is seeking bids from institutions wishing to host the 2021 Annual Scientific Meeting of the ASA and the 2021 Harley Wood School for Astronomy (HWSA). In 2021, the ASM meeting dates are suggested to be Monday July 12 - Friday July 16, 2021. The HWSA is usually held in the days preceding the ASM. These dates are chosen to adjoin with the Edoardo Amaldi Conference on Gravitational Waves, hosted by Swinburne University in the week of July 19 - 23, 2021. Locations that allow for straightforward attendance at both meetings would be beneficial. Details of the guidelines for the bid can be found at: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/dPk5CxnMRvtYJjlPT84jQp?domain=asa.astronomy.org.au Bid must be submitted by January 31, 2020 for consideration by ASA Council in its February meeting. As a reminder, the 2020 ASM will be absorbed into the 14th Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting of the IAU (APRIM), to be held in Perth in the week of July 6-10, 2020. ASA-specific meetings and Town Halls will be accommodated in the program. https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/q4vrCyoNVrcxN31ACMKGil?domain=aprim2020.org Please direct any queries to me. Please note the deadline for abstract submission is Sat, 7 Dec 2019 and the deadline for registrations is Wed, 15 Jan 2020. We would also like to recommend to book accommodation as soon as possible since February is still tourist season. The meeting is part of a series of conferences that has been dedicated to the topic of Cosmic Flows over the last few decades: most recently 2012 in Queensland, Australia, 2013 in Marseille, France and 2016 in Quy Nhon, Vietnam. Since then progress has been made on various fronts ? such as on the reconstruction and presentation of flow fields from peculiar velocity catalogues and surveys like 2MTF and 6dFGRS, first results from the SKA Pathfinders and the TAIPAN survey, and the 3D-visualisation front where sophisticated tools are now being used to scientifically analyse data sets such as HI-data cubes, cosmological maps, simulations, by immersing yourself inside the data using Virtual Reality to interactively view and interrogate the data using varying parameter settings. In order to help cover the operational costs of completing the SkyMapper Southern Sky Survey, which will be publicly available, the ANU has decided to make a fraction of time on SkyMapper available to purchase. If you are interested in purchasing observing time on SkyMapper, please send your inquiries to Christian Wolf (christian.wolf at anu.edu.au) with a short description of your plans. This will serve to open a discussion concerning an appropriate price per night of time. Currently, SkyMapper nights are selling for AU$3-6k per night, depending on type of night (dark/bright), cadence of observations, amount of data processing required, and the total number of nights purchased; please note that a minimum purchase of AU$20,000 applies. For more information about SkyMapper, please see: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/rwOyC3Q8Z2Fn7L88CgQ63P?domain=skymapper.anu.edu.au Most of the SkyMapper observing time will still be dedicated to the public SkyMapper Southern Survey, now expected to be complete in 2021. Note that the third data release (DR3) to the Australian community is currently slated for 31 January 2020 and will provide deep data in all six SkyMapper passbands for 80% of the hemisphere. Stas will assume the role on February 1, 2020, when the current Chair Professor Melanie Johnston-Hollitt steps down. Melanie will remain on the Editorial Board as an Associate Editor to ensure a smooth transition. On behalf of the membership, and ASA Council, I would like to thank Melanie for her dedicated work to support and improve the journal over her two-year term as Chair. In this time, she has overseen: * Improvements in the interface between Overleaf and PASA, and interface to ScholarOne * Increased impact factor to 4.878 * Increased number of submitted papers, and published number of pages * Introduction of ORCID requirement, making publication tracking more straightforward * Increased ECR referee representation, through a call to community. This is a challenging time for all journals, and Society journals operate under a very tight budget. PASA's impact factor and high-impact publications over the past several years are evidence of the quality and dedication of the Editorial Board. We welcome Stas to the role in 2020, and hope the membership continues to support our excellent Society journal. What many of you may not realise is that there is a very significant astrophysics component to these meetings. Of the 8 Scientific Commissions, commission E is solely astrophysics, and commissions B, C, E and H have significant astrophysics components. In my own fields of interest, scientific have the following joint scientific events (i.e. conferences within the assembly): - Unifying Planetary System Formation out of Elementary Building Blocks: from Dust, Gas and Ice to our Solar System and Exoplanets - Current and Future Projects for Exoplanet Detections and Characterization - The Study of Exoplanet Atmospheres and the Search for Life Outside of the Solar System As an SOC member on two of these events, I can confirm that there are many top international invited speakers secured. The dates are August 15-22 next year, with abstracts due in February. https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/lBm1CwVLQmiBZA2GiVBbdJ?domain=cospar2020.org This is a really fantastic conference for both advancing each of our own specialised sub-fields, while also learning a lot about space research (and research from space). It is both a unique opportunity to attend a major international conference with low carbon footprint, and showcase the world leading research being conducted from Australia. I hope to see many of you there! Regards, Mike. ? Our goal is to provide an opportunity for a PhD student to translate data analysis skills from astronomy to challenging, data-driven problems in the early detection of heart disease. PROJECT BACKGROUND: Early identification or prediction of the likely onset of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity are crucial to improving public health. The Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute is a globally significant medical research organisation working to address these medical challenges. In partnership with the Centre for Astrophysics & Supercomputing and the Iverson Health Innovation research Institute at Swinburne University of Technology, the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute is investigating the translation of data-driven processes and techniques from astronomy and astrophysics into the domain of medical imaging and diagnosis, with the aim of developing faster, more robust, and more powerful diagnostic tools. The goal is to apply established and well-tested methods from astronomy and astrophysics to the early detection of heart disease, through two initial projects: (1) detection of early aortic valve disease; and (2) quantification of cardiac calcification. In both cases, discovery and diagnosis requires new visualisation and analysis methods within a data-intensive context. The internships are offered through the APR.Intern program: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/xg0qCYWL1viro5RKc0oid4?domain=aprintern.org.au Applications close on 18 December 2019 For more information about the projects, please contact: * A/Prof Christopher Fluke (cfluke at swin.edu.au) * Dr Ned Taylor (entaylor at swin.edu.au) For more information about the application process, eligibility, or other PhD internship opportunities with APR.Intern, please contact: * Alan Nguyen, APR.Intern Business Development - Vic (a.nguyen at aprintern.org.au) This Project is an initiative of the Australian Government being conducted as part of the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy and administered by Astronomy Australia Ltd.
