From caroline.foster at sydney.edu.au Tue Nov 19 09:45:34 2019 From: caroline.foster at sydney.edu.au (Caroline Foster) Date: Mon, 18 Nov 2019 22:45:34 +0000 Subject: [ASA] Call for ESO OPC nominations Message-ID: <5172E684-58CD-400C-B585-5A4016DF30BD@sydney.edu.au> Dear fellow Australian astronomers, Please forward the following to relevant people within and beyond your institute. ESO will soon issue its biannual call for nominations to serve on the Observing Programmes Committee (i.e. the ESO ?TAC?). As the ESO Users Committee representative, it is my role to nominate suitable and willing Australian astronomers. About half of Australia's nominations are due to expire this month, so if you have been nominated 2 years ago but haven?t yet served on the OPC, your nomination is expiring and can be renewed. The terms of reference and rules of procedures are available here. The OPC meets twice a year physically in Garching, Germany, at ESO?s expense. Selected panel and committee members will need to carefully review several tens of proposals each and grade around 100 proposals at the meeting based on discussion. Serving on the OPC represents a significant amount of work and time. For this reason, people typically serve on the OPC for only 2 consecutive periods (1 year), although more senior astronomers may be asked to serve for 2 years as panel chairs. If you/someone you know are/is qualified and available to serve on the OPC (ESO requests for 2nd postdoc of beyond), please contact me directly. Be sure to include the OPC subcategory. Additionally, ORCID, experience on ESO telescopes and the year of PhD award may optionally be included with the nomination (recommended). If you have been nominated recently, but haven?t been contacted by ESO yet, know that your name stays in the system for a total of 4 periods (2 years). If you are unsure, I am quite happy to check the database for your name. It is in Australia?s best interest to have as many Australian astronomers on the various OPC panels, which cover a range of science topics. I am looking for a diverse (particularly in gender, expertise and seniority) pool of Australian astronomers who are in their second postdoc or beyond to nominate. Exceptional junior postdocs may also be considered. Clear Skies! Each member country was asked to prepare a short "Happy Birthday IAU!" video featuring contributions to astronomy from their country over the century. This is Australia's contribution. The video was financially supported by the Department of Innovation, Industry and Science (DIIS), the ASA, and ICRAR. Contributions to the video were sought from the community, and we thank those who contributed material. The video was produced by Red Empire Media and project managed by Pete Wheeler?Australia's Outreach representative to the IAU?with editorial direction from the ASA and DIIS. I hope you find it inspiring, and a great testament to Australia's contributions to astronomy. https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/PFoHCq7BKYtAGPYEuZwFEB?domain=youtube.com Regards, Cathryn _______________________________________________________ Cathryn Trott Associate Professor ARC Future Fellow President, Astronomical Society of Australia ARC Centre of Excellence for All Sky Astrophysics in 3D (ASTRO 3D) International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research Curtin University Bentley WA, Australia cathryn.trott at curtin.edu.au -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The hack week will be held 10 to 14 February 2020 at the AAO (North Ryde) in Sydney and its content is developed in collaboration with representatives from OzGrav, ASTRO 3D, and the ASVOs with input from the ASA ECR chapter and PhD students. Aside from structured tutorials delivered by experts, the astrocomp hack week will include participant led unconference sessions, presentations, hack sessions, and tutorials. As well as upskilling the participants the hack week aims to encourage collaboration and sharing of knowledge of astronomy tools, e.g., useful Python packages, techniques and coding best practices. A draft schedule can be found here. For more information visit the astrocomp hack week webpage and to apply please fill out the application form found here. JWST proposing will require detailed knowledge of these tools, as unlike HST the JWST proposals will need to include a fully developed ?Phase 2? observing plan. The workshop will be held in Melbourne at Swinburne University from 16-18 March 2020 and will be delivered by Australian researchers trained at NASA/ESA JWST Master Classes for this purpose. More information about the workshop and the registration details can be found here: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/3MonCVAGXPtr1A0DIGIVeG?domain=astronomy.swin.edu.au Please register your interest by 6th December 2019. The workshop will be limited to 20 participants and if the interest is larger than that we will select participants from a variety of institutes who could act as institute representatives to dissipate the knowledge. Additionally, we will also provide opportunities for online participation via zoom for those who are interested but cannot attend. We are actively seeking sponsors so hope to have some financial support for travel for some participants. Please let us know if you have any questions. The NCA exists to foster astronomy in Australia, to liaise with international scientific bodies, and to advise the Council of the Australian Academy of Science on relevant matters. One of its main activities is to oversee the Decadal Plan process for Australian Astronomy. In 2019 and 2020 the committee's major task is the review of the current decadal plan: www.science.org.au/astronomy-midterm The NCA is made up of about eight members appointed by the Executive Committee of the Academy. The current members of the committee are listed at www.science.org.au/national-committee-astronomy There is one vacancy on the NCA from 2020 to replace Chris Tinney, whose term completes in December 2019. To make the process of selecting new members as open as possible, the NCA is calling for nominees from the broader astronomy community. Members of the NCA should be respected members of the Australian astronomy community with a broad spread of institutions and specialisations. Interest in these new appointments from female members of the community is encouraged to ensure gender balance of the National Committee. The National Committee guidelines can be found at www.science.org.au/guidelines-national-committees The guidelines relating to membership can be summarised as follows: * Members should be scientists active in the field * Membership shall be appropriate to 'the best interests of Australian science' * Membership will not usually exceed eight people * Members will usually be appointed for up to three years * Re-appointment for one further year is possible in 'exceptional circumstances' Note that all appointments are made by the Academy's Executive Committee on the basis of a nomination forwarded by the Chair of the NCA. Nominations will be reviewed by a panel consisting of the NCA Chair (Lister Staveley-Smith), the President of the ASA (Cath Trott) and one Fellow of the Academy who is not an NCA member (Elaine Sadler). This review panel (in consultation with the Academy's Secretary for Physical Sciences) will make a recommendation on the vacant position, which will be forwarded to the Academy's Executive Committee for approval. Please send your nominations by email to the Academy (nc at science.org.au) before 5.00 pm AEDT on Friday 22 November 2019. Nominations should be brief and include your name, institution and a very short outline of expertise. Self-nominations are acceptable.
