4HS: the 4MOST Hemispheric Survey

(Apologies if you receive this more than once).
We are preparing a proposal for a 4MOST Community Survey, which would obtain near total spectroscopic redshift completeness (> ~98%) for ~5 million galaxies over a hemisphere (~20,000 sq. deg.), with a particular focus on local (z < ~0.1) galaxies, groups, and clusters.
Anticipating a call for 4MOST Community Survey Projects by the end of November, our purpose with this email is to solicit interested parties to join the project, and to assemble a broad and diverse leadership team.
The primary science goal for our 4MOST Hemisphere Survey (4HS) is to establish a transformational laboratory for studying the baryon cycle in and around galaxies as a function of mass and environment --- particularly when combined with other recent and upcoming surveys of the Southern hemisphere including: eRosita, SkyMapper, LSST, VHS, Euclid, WISE, ASKAP-EMU, ASKAP-WALLABY, and ultimately SKA.
4HS cosmology science goals include a 2% measurement of the growth rate of structure and fundamental tests of gravity, which are wholly complementary to RSD and BAO experiments using 4MOST, DESI, and others. As a comprehensive catalogue of galaxy and group environments across the full Southern sky, and particularly in the context of LSST, LIGO, and ultimately SKA, 4HS will be a generational legacy dataset.
We are planning two open 'town call' information sessions (zoom details at the end of this email) in two weeks' time:
* Nov 6: 0900 UTC (= 4am in New York; 10am in Paris; 8pm in Melbourne)
* Nov 6: 2000 UTC (= 3pm in New York; 9pm in Paris; 7am+1d in Melbourne)
We have chosen these times in our best effort to accommodate all timezones. We are open to scheduling a third call if there is sufficient interest, we just didn't want to inflict another doodle poll on you!
If you would like to join these calls, please let us know via the following (short!) google form: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/Q27ACQnzP0tyWlx5UxBP7z?domain=forms.gle. We intend to record at least one of these calls, and will gladly send a link if you cannot attend (please indicate via the form).
Under the 4MOST rules, there are not restrictions on who can join a Community Survey: all are welcome. However, there are limits on the number of people who can join after a Survey has been approved, hence our desire to look beyond our usual suspects to establish the strongest possible team at this early stage.
One goal for the near term is to identify a core leadership team to help develop a compelling Letter of Intent for submission in Q1 of 2020. Given the nature of the project, we are keen to establish strong cross-collaborative links (including theory as well as other surveys) from the beginning. As PIs, we are committed to achieving gender parity within the leadership group. At this stage, anticipating the question from ESO, we have a strong focus on identifying effort against key work packages, within both 4HS and the larger 4MOST project.
If you are interested in joining the project, but especially if you are interested to nominate for a leadership position within the survey, please let us know using the same google form (https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/Q27ACQnzP0tyWlx5UxBP7z?domain=forms.gle).
To be considered for a position on the leadership group, please complete the form by November 22; we will endeavour to have an Executive Team in place by December 5. However, we will continue to receive expressions of interest.
Thanks for your time and attention, and may your skies be ever clear!
Michelle Cluver and Edward Taylor
