Dear colleagues,

I would be very grateful if you could forward this notice for a PhD scholarship at ICRAR/UWA to any interested students.

Best regards,

Luca

PhD scholarship in galaxy evolution at ICRAR/UWA – Deadline July 15

Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship to work with Dr. Luca Cortese at the University of Western Australia (UWA) node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR).

The successful candidate will join the Local and Distant Universe Science Units at ICRAR and work on a project aimed at understanding the physical processes driving galaxy transformation across environment. The project will combine data from large optical integral field spectroscopic surveys (e.g., SAMI and MANGA) with multi-wavelength observations to investigate the interplay between angular momentum, mass and environment in regulating the star formation histories of galaxies. This work will deliver a local benchmark needed to link surveys of nearby galaxies to higher redshift investigations (e.g., DEVILS, 4MOST/WAVES, KROSS). The student will become part of international survey teams and will have the opportunity to observe with optical telescopes such as the Anglo Australian Telescope.

ICRAR is one of Australia’s top astronomical research institutes, offering a vibrant and friendly working environment. Established in 2009 as a high profile equal joint venture between Curtin University and UWA, ICRAR is a leading organization in the international Square Kilometre Array project. ICRAR/UWA staff plays leading roles in programs that exploit state-of-the-art radio telescopes (e.g. ASKAP), exquisite multi-wavelength datasets (e.g. GAMA, SAMI), and the latest galaxy formation models run on powerful HPC facilities, such as the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre.

Situated on the Swan River, UWA is one of Australia’s most picturesque campuses. Its open courtyards lush and verdant, are a place to study and relax, taking advantage of Perth’s beautiful climate.

We seek excellent students with strong background in physics and astronomy. Any experience with the analysis of spectroscopic data and/or spectral energy distribution fitting would be an advantage. ICRAR/UWA is committed to equity and diversity and encourages applications from all qualified candidates.

Applications are welcome from both domestic and international candidates.

Applicants are requested to submit an Expression of Interest, which must include a 1-page cover letter (indicating their interest in this project), a detailed C.V. and academic transcripts following the instructions on the application website<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/2bIJCoVzGQiY5WojF10npW?domain=form.jotform.co> by July 15, 2019. Please also arrange to have two reference letters sent by this deadline (see application website).
