Dear ASA members,

The Research Centre for Astronomy, Astrophysics and Astrophotonics at Macquarie University (MQAAAstro), Sydney, Australia invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a prestigious three-year independent Macquarie University Research Fellowship.

MQAAAstro research groups work in the areas of planet and star formation, stellar and binary evolution, Galactic archaeology, the Galactic interstellar medium, galaxy formation and evolution, cosmology, and instrumentation, with strong links to the nearby CSIRO Astrophysics and Space Science division. Macquarie University is also the principal node of the Australian Astronomical Optics consortium - building instruments for the world’s largest telescopes; and hosts Data Central - a science-driven data archive and cutting-edge eResearch platform. MQAAAstro has consistently achieved the top ranking of ‘Well above world standard’ in the national assessment of astronomy research excellence since 2012.

Situated on a pleasant lakeside campus adjoining National Park forest, Macquarie University is just 30 minutes train-ride from the iconic centre of Sydney – a vibrant and culturally diverse city.

Eligible applicants will have a PhD awarded after March 2016, or submitted by August 2019 (or equivalent, considering career interruptions). Fellowships provide up to AU$50,000 of research funds, and professional support for additional funding applications. Salaries start from AU$93,830, plus 17% superannuation.

Applications from women and other under-represented groups are particularly encouraged. Macquarie University is committed to sustaining an equitable and inclusive organisation; at least 40% of Fellowship recipients will be female, and at least 40% will be male.

Expressions of interests (cover letter, CV, 1-page research statement) should be sent to a.bibost at mq.edu.au by 10th May 2019. Following pre-selection (notification 17th May), candidates will be mentored through a two-step process, with a first stage expression of interest deadline of 30th May. Full applications are due two months later, with final outcomes in November.
