While this process has led to many positive outcomes it does not easily facilitate the identification or undertaking of larger or more financially significant projects that may be of benefit to the Society. At its July 2017 meeting Council determined that it would therefore be beneficial to undertake a strategic planning exercise to understand the longer term goals of the Society, and to allow short term priorities to be placed in a broader strategic context. The resulting strategic plan aims to articulate the priorities of the ASA, and seeks to identify opportunities with the goal of maximising the effectiveness of the ASA in achieving these priorities. Chapters undertake many of the significant Society activities. During 2018 ASA Chapters through their steering committees (and the PASA Editorial Board) provided work plans as primary input into the development of the ASA strategic plan. The draft strategic plan and accompanying statement of activities and priorities is attached for comment by ASA members. Council would welcome comments which can be submitted by return email to swyithe at unimelb.edu.au prior to January 31, 2019. With this email, we are seeking nominations to the committee from the Australian astronomical community. We aim for at least one Australian representative on this committee. The committee will be responsible for developing the scope of the future MSE Education and Public Outreach program, which will be international in focus as well as tailored to meet the needs of the partners. The committee members should be people who are well acquainted with education and science communication in general and ideally with astronomy/science facilities specifically. They need not be professional astronomers, but should be familiar with the needs/expectations of the astronomy community. Please feel free to share this request as appropriate. To nominate yourself or a colleague, please send the nominee's name, contact details, and a one-page CV to andrew.hopkins at mq.edu.au by Friday 14 December 2018. If you have any questions about the role, anticipated time commitment or other expectations, please contact andrew.hopkins at mq.edu.au. Andrew Hopkins for the MSE Management Group ? This year we have introduced a new ASA membership status for International members to recognise their lesser ability to engage in ASA-supported activities. It will reduce the cost of membership to encourage members who leave Australia, especially recent PhD graduates, to stay engaged with the ASA and the Australian astronomical community. The membership fee is now the same as the Student membership, less the 10% GST. Most international members have been automatically moved to the new status and should receive an appropriate invoice. Hopefully it will all work as expected - please let me know if you see any issues. If you have recently moved overseas and the system doesn?t know, please update your address details and send an email to request a move to international status. Retired members are now also handled the same way. Please let us know if you have recently retired and should have your status changed. Finally, I would like to remind you all about the Foundation for the Advancement of Astronomy (FAA) - see https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/w5wuCp8AJQtwvwRZsP30GV?domain=asa.astronomy.org.au The FAA is the ASA?s channel for accepting tax-deductible donations. These donations are moving the FAA to the point where the recently expanded set of ASA Prizes is financially sustainable in the long term. Donations also allow us to consider new initiatives to support the astronomical community. Any suggestions for initiatives are always welcome (the international memberships is a recent example). Best wishes for the coming holiday season and the new year. John ????????????????????????? "The standard you walk past is the standard you accept? ?????????????????????????
