Expressions of Interest from domestic and international students are invited for a PhD scholarship on a new project to test the fundamental laws of nature using precision stellar spectroscopy. The project goal is to test possible variations in electromagnetism's strength as a function of dark matter density across our Galaxy. The successful applicant will work with Prof. Michael Murphy in the Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing (CAS) at Swinburne University of Technology (Melbourne, Australia) to assist in a large spectroscopic survey and a targeted, high-precision program with the new ESPRESSO spectrograph on the VLT. A brief description of the project can be found here. The PhD scholarship is for 3 years with a possible 6 month extension, with conditions and stipend reflecting those of the Australian Government's Research Training Program. An additional AUD$3,000 per annum top-up to the stipend will be made for 3 years. The deadline for Expressions of Interest is Friday, 12 November. CAS is one of Australia's largest astronomy research centres, with 23 academic staff, 17 postdoctoral researchers and 35 PhD students, with 30-40% growth expected over the next 2 years. It is the only Australian institute with guaranteed access to the world's largest optical telescopes: the twin 10-m W.M. Keck telescopes in Hawaii. CAS astronomers also access ESO's 8-m VLT in Chile via Australia's recent partnership with ESO. CAS hosts OzGrav and is a partner in ASTRO 3D, two $40m Australian Research Council Centres of Excellence, and houses OzStar, the Australian GPU Supercomputer for Theoretical Astrophysics. CAS is strongly committed to diversity and to equity and welcomes applications from qualified candidates of any gender, orientation, nationality, and background. Applicants can find more information, including instructions for how to apply and the subsequent process, here. NOTE - All proposers need to tell us whether they plan to observe in person or remotely, and whether they are requesting paid or unpaid nights. Proposals with these fields left blank will be discarded. Instruments available: Nasymth A: WiFeS Nasymth B: Imager or Echelle. Observing proposals must be submitted electronically via the RSAA web pages. Full instructions are available at http://rsaa.anu.edu.au/observers/observing-rsaa. *************************** PLEASE NOTE *********************************** The ANU 2.3-metre telescope at Siding Spring Observatory is scientifically productive and a valuable resource for student training and instrument development. These diverse and significant benefits justify its continued operation for the foreseeable future. The full cost to the ANU Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) of operating the 2.3m telescope (including staff, maintenance and repairs) corresponds to approximately $1200 per night. To defray this cost, RSAA is offering priority on the 2.3m telescope to paying customers from Australia and elsewhere, while simultaneously ensuring a level of open access to astronomers at all Australian institutions. 50% of the telescope time will be allocated to paid priority proposals, which will need to contribute $600 per night towards the running costs of the telescope. The remaining 50% of the time is open-access and remains free. To be eligible to apply for open-access time, 50% or more of the proposers must be based at Australian institutions. In future years the price of a priority night will increase and the fraction of open-access nights will decrease. With this email, we are pleased to invite you to register for the programme before the deadline of *** November 12, 2018 *** by following the link at the bottom of this web page: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/9sp8Cvl0PoCDZN96iQSzId?domain=munich-iapp.de The programme aims to connect teams executing new surveys of HI in galaxies with the broader astronomical communities studying gas and galaxy evolution, bringing together a cross-cutting group of scientists that includes both theorists and multi-wavelength observers. Roughly a week apiece will be devoted to examining four key questions: o How do ionised and molecular gas cool into and condense out of galaxies' HI reservoirs as functions of redshift, environment, and other parameters? o How do HI emission-line and absorption-line observations relate to optical absorption-line measurements of the evolving cosmic gas density? o How can HI observations be exploited to understand the dynamical properties of disk galaxies and their possible evolution with redshift? o How do surveys of HI at z = 0 best inform the analysis of surveys of HI at z ~ 1, and vice versa? Following an initial three-day topical workshop ("Nine Billion Years of Neutral Gas Evolution") on July 29-31, the programme will have an informal format, with a very limited number of talks in the morning and ample room for discussion and collaboration in the afternoon. Because space for the programme per se is limited to 45 persons per day, final decisions on accepted participants will be made after the registration deadline. (The topical workshop will have a much greater capacity and a separate registration process and deadline.) To facilitate your planning, we can already provide some practical information about the programme: o Accepted participants from outside the Munich area will receive support for accommodation and local expenses in the amount of EUR 80 per day; families with children will receive additional support in the amount of EUR 40 per day. o Accepted participants from the Munich area will be assigned office space on-site to enable their full participation in the programme, but will not be eligible for financial support. o Advanced graduate students from outside the Munich area may apply for up to EUR 500 of travel support when registering for the programme. As described on the MIAPP website, such an application must be supported by a letter of recommendation from a supervisor that is submitted before the registration deadline. o MIAPP has a strict policy of only accepting participants who commit to staying for at least two weeks of a programme. (If this policy precludes your participation in next year's programme, we hope you will still consider attending the three-day topical workshop as an alternative.) We hope you are as excited about this scientific opportunity as we are, and we hope you will indeed register by the deadline of *** November 12, 2018 ***. Please do not hesitate to contact us or the MIAPP staff in the event that you require further information.
