Dear colleagues --

I would be very grateful if you would forward this call for PhD applications on to your local and international networks.

We are very pleased to invite Expressions of Interest from domestic and international students to complete their PhD in astronomy and astrophysics at the Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing (CAS) at Swinburne University of Technology.

The deadline for this call for Expressions of Interest is Friday, 21 September.

CAS is one the country's largest and fastest growing Astronomy institutes, with 23 research faculty staff, about 20 postdoctoral researchers, and more than 30 PhD students. It is the only Australian institute with guaranteed access to the world's largest optical telescopes: the twin 10m Keck telescopes in Hawaii. CAS is also home to the gSTAR and OzSTAR supercomputing facilities. With expertise in observational astronomy across the electromagnetic spectrum (especially optical, infrared, and radio astronomy) as well as many different facets of computational and theoretical astrophysics, CAS astronomers have many and diverse ways to discover, measure, understand, imagine, and simulate the most exciting astrophysical phenomena in our universe.

As of 2018, the Graduate Certificate of Research Innovation and Management is a new feature of the Swinburne PhD programme. This Certificate formally acknowledges and accredits some of the more important and transferable skills that higher research demands. All CAS PhD students are automatically enrolled in this Graduate Certificate programme. More information on this Graduate Certificate can be found here.

A list of PhD projects that are currently being offered at CAS can be found here.

While this list includes some PhD projects that have guaranteed funding through external agencies, PhD positions at CAS typically rely on winning a scholarship or equivalent funding.  Swinburne offers and administers a range of scholarships for domestic and international students, including the Swinburne University Postgraduate Research Award (SUPRA) scheme. All scholarships include a tuition-fee waiver. More information, including eligibility requirements, selection criteria, current rates, and application deadlines, can be found here.

With this Call we particularly encourage Expressions of Interest from outstanding domestic applicants, who aim to obtain PhD funding through the Research Training Program Stipend (RTPS) scheme (open to Australian citizens and permanent residents; applications due October 31).

CAS is strongly committed to diversity and to equity and welcomes applications from qualified candidates of any gender, orientation, nationality, and background.

Prospective PhD students can find more information, including instructions for how to apply, here.  For any further specific queries, please contact Dr Edward N Taylor: entaylor at swin.edu.au.

Many thanks!
