Apologies if you receive this email more than once.* Besides their direct scientific value for studying galaxies, large spectroscopic redshift samples are essential for properly training, calibrating, and validating photometric redshifts. This becomes particularly important and challenging for the next generation of cosmological surveys, which require high precision photometric redshifts. The photometric redshift teams for upcoming wide-field surveys such as Euclid , LSST, and WFIRST have highlighted the need to build a reference database of spectroscopic redshifts to train and later validate the various photometric redshift methods being developed for these surveys. Such a database will also be very useful for current programs. We have started to collect spectroscopic redshifts in the following commonly adopted calibration and/or deep fields split between the Euclid primary and secondary calibration fields (but with the strong expectation that these fields include the key calibration fields for other surveys): Euclid Deep Fields: - North Ecliptic Pole: 1.8 deg radius circle centered at R.A.=17:58:56, Dec.=+66:01:04; - CDFS (including GOODS-S ): 1.8 deg radius circle centered at R.A.=3:32:49, Dec.=-26:16:41; Primary Euclid Calibration Fields: - COSMOS: 2.5x2.5 deg2 region centered on R.A.=10:00:30, Dec.=+02:30:00; - VVDS: 1x1 deg2 region centered at R.A.=02:25:59, Dec.=+04:29:40; - GOODS-N: 1x1 deg2 region centered at R.A.=12:36:44, Dec.=+62:14:24; - SXDS: 2.5x2.5 deg2 region centered at R.A.=02:18:00, Dec.=-05:00:00; - EGS: 1x1 deg2 region centered at R.A.=14:19:27, Dec.=+52:40:56; - XMM-LSS/CFHT-LS W1: 9x8 deg2 region centered at R.A.=02:18:00, Dec.=-07:00:00. Secondary Euclid Calibration Fields: - CFHT-LS D4: 1x1 deg2 region centered at R.A.=22:15:31, Dec.=-17:43:56; - CFHT-LS W2: 5x5 deg2 region centered at R.A.=08:57:49, Dec.=-03:19:00; - CFHT-LS W3: 7x7 deg2 region centered at R.A.=14:17:54, Dec.=+54:30:31; - CFHT-LS W2/SSA22: 5x5 deg2 region centered at R.A.=22:13:18 Dec.=+01:19:00. We note that the field characteristics may slightly change due to operational constraints. The goal is not only to collect spectroscopic redshifts in these fields but also to merge redundant observations, investigate potential redshift assignment discrepancies as well as homogenize the quality flag scheme. Requirements on photometric redshift accuracy imposed by the cosmological objectives of these Stage IV experiments demand that the spectroscopy used for the photometric redshift training be as pure as possible. If you are P.I. of past or on-going spectroscopic programs in these fields, we would be much obliged if you were willing to allow us to incorporate your data into a master spectroscopic database. We note that we are creating this spectroscopic database for one purpose: to improve the training/calibration of photometric redshifts for wide-field extragalactic surveys. Ultimately, our goal is to provide a unique, quality-homogenized master database of spectroscopic redshifts to the scientific community. If you wish your data to remain private, however, and be used only to help the survey photometric redshift calibration efforts, we will not incorporate them into the public master catalogue. *If you have data in these fields and would be willing to contribute to the current effort, please contact us.* At some stage, we may request 2D and 1D products in order to re-assign redshifts and quality flag following the survey quality flag assessment. ESO has issued a call for nominations to serve on the Observing Programmes Committee (i.e. the ESO ?TAC?). As the ESO Users Committee representative, it is my role to nominate suitable and willing Australian astronomers. Details and guidelines are attached. The OPC meets twice a year in Garching, Germany at ESO?s expense. Selected panel and committee members will need to carefully review several tens of proposals each and grade around 100 proposals at the meeting based on the discussions. This is a significant amount of work and time. For this reason, people typically serve on the OPC for 2 consecutive periods (1 year). It is in Australia?s best interest to have as many Australian astronomers on the various OPC panels, which cover a range of science topics. I am looking for a varied pool of Australian astronomers who are in their second postdoc or beyond to nominate. Exceptional junior postdocs may also be considered. People who have been nominated in the past but have not been selected to be on the OPC are still in the pool for this round. If you would like me to nominate you or someone else, please email me. Nominations can occur at any time, but if you would like to be considered for this round, please email me by the end of today (sorry about the short notice). Also please include the OPC category that best represents your research expertise: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/gk7OCP7yOZtAv7A2TzDv_X?domain=eso.org. Clear Skies! The NCA exists to foster astronomy in Australia, to liaise with international scientific bodies, and to advise the Council of the Australian Academy of Science on relevant matters. One of its main activities is to oversee the Decadal Plan process for Australian Astronomy. In the coming few years the NCA plans a strategic white paper on opportunities in the changed (and changing) landscape within space science and astronomy in Australia (e.g. with the detection of gravitational waves, and the new Australian Space Agency), and this will lead into the mid-term review of the astronomy decadal plan. The NCA is made up of eight members appointed by the Executive Committee of the Academy. The current members of the committee are listed at https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/XBBRCzvOWKiNERpzi4WTDT?domain=science.org.au There are three vacancies on the NCA this year: One vacancy from July 2018 to replace Professor Warrick Couch, and two further vacancies from 31 December 2018, to replace Professor Lisa Kewley & A/Professor Gavin Rowell who all complete their terms this year. To make the process of selecting new members as open as possible, the NCA is calling for nominees from the broad astronomy community. Members of the NCA should be respected members of the Australian astronomy community with a broad spread of institutions and specialisations. Interest in these new appointments from women and under-represented groups is encouraged to ensure a diversity of experience of the National Committee. The committee will seek at least one Australian Academy of Science member to sit on the NCA. The National Committee guidelines can be found at https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/K0VyCANZvPiJB935c8pq7M?domain=science.org.au The guidelines relating to membership can be summarised as follows: * Members should be scientists active in the field * Membership shall be appropriate to 'the best interests of Australian science' * Membership will not usually exceed 8 people * Members will usually be appointed for up to 3 years * Re-appointment for one further year is possible in ?exceptional circumstances' Note that all appointments are made by the AAS Executive Committee on the basis of a nomination forwarded by the Chair of the NCA. Nominations will be reviewed by a panel consisting of Professor Virginia Kilborn (Chair), Professor Chris Tinney, and one Fellow of the Academy who is not an NCA member, Professor Elaine Sadler. This review panel (in consultation with the Academy's Secretary for Physical Sciences) will make a recommendation on the vacant positions, which will be forwarded to the AAS Executive Committee for approval. Please send your nominations by email to the NCA (nc at science.org.au) with the subject line "NCA nomination" before 5pm (AEST) on 20 June 2018. Nominations can be brief (name, institution and a very short outline of expertise are all that's needed, and self-nominations are acceptable).
