A principal component of this initiative is to empower the astronomy community to harness the potential of the next generation telescopes and astronomy simulations. ADACS LMS In the past months, we have been developing a series of webinars to help the community master a variety of topics related to computing for astronomers. These webinars are a short series of informational videos compiled by theme on the ADACS LMS, and available at https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/LmhkCq7BKYtnXqP2iZQ6is?domain=lms.adacs.org.au. Current webinars include the following: Introduction to Computing Clusters This tutorial is intended for those having very little experience with operating in a computing cluster environment. It provides simple introductions to: the concept of parallel computing; the hardware configuration of computing clusters; working with queue systems and logging in with SSH. Introduction to Structured Query Language (SQL) SQL is a standard language for storing, manipulating and retrieving data in databases. This tutorial covers: Relational Database Management System (RDBMS), Data Definition Language, Data Manipulation Language, and Astronomy Examples with SDSS. Scientific Data Visualization with Python This tutorial covers the basic principles of scientific data visualization with working examples using the python language. Introduction to Version Control with Git This tutorial covers the basics of Version Control with working examples using Git. Introduction to MPI In this tutorial, we introduce the Message Passing Interface (MPI). MPI is the "industry standard" for writing message passing programs on High Performing Computing platforms. This tutorial will introduce you to MPI through working examples using the Python language. Introduction to HDF5 In this tutorial, you will learn about HDF5. HDF5 enables fast programs via clever features like efficient memory management, and organised storage of data next and metadata in tree-like structures?making it an excellent format for scientific computing and parallel I/O. Introduction to astropy This tutorial introduces the structure and core functionalities of astropy, an community astronomy package written in the Python language. IVOA Table Access Protocol In this tutorial, we will introduce the Table Access Protocol, or TAP. TAP provides a flexible yet standard access to different kinds of databases within the Virtual Observatory. Access content To access the content, you will first need to create an account on the LMS by clicking the ?Create new account? button on the main page. Once you are logged in, you can access webinars from the ?Site Home? tab. ADACS is a collaboration between Swinburne University of Technology, Curtin University, and the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre. It is funded under the Astronomy National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) Program via Astronomy Australia Ltd (AAL). We encourage everyone who has need of skilled software development support (presumably, nearly everyone receiving this message) to apply for the program. At this point, we seek only one-page maximum submissions describing your intended project. Enquiries can be directed to Greg Poole (gpoole at swin.edu.au ) or Jarrod Hurley (jhurley at swin.edu.au ). Please send submissions to TAC at adacs.org.au Additional details can be found from the original call for submissions, copied below: Astronomy Data and Computing Services (ADACS) Call for Expressions of Interest for Scientific Computing and Software Development Services - 2018B A principal component of ADACS is the provision of expertise for the design and development of software tools and infrastructure. In addition to providing resources and support for our major data platforms (e.g. the All-Sky Virtual Observatory project, and the gSTAR data management and collaboration platform), ADACS will provide support to other small-to-intermediate scale tools/platforms by introducing scientific computing and software development as a service. Within Q3/4 2018, ADACS will provide the equivalent of a minimum of 1 full-time computational scientist as a resource to the community. A diversely qualified team will participate, with expertise covering a variety of areas including (but not limited to): system analysis and design, scientific computing, high-performance computing, data science, web development, large-scale scientific databases, cloud computing and scientific visualization. The allocation of these resources will be merit-based with the final evaluation to be performed by the Astronomy Data and Computing Services Time Allocation Committee. To prepare the community for effective proposals, we have split the application process into two stages: an expressions of interest (EoI) stage where we ask interested parties to submit a one-page (maximum) proposal outlining their scientific objectives, to which we will provide detailed feedback regarding feasibility, optimal approaches and required resources; and a subsequent round of formal submissions -- shaped by our input -- to be made to the ADACS TAC. We ask that EOI submissions be kept to no more than one page and provide the following: a concise description of the proposed project; expected benefits of the final software product; if possible, an initial estimate of the required resources. When considering projects for this process, we also ask that you keep the following in mind: all ADACS development will be open-source, and as such, made publicly available. Inquires can be directed to Greg Poole (gpoole at swin.edu.au ) or Jarrod Hurley (jhurley at swin.edu.au ). The deadline for EoI submissions is the 6th April 2018, 5 pm AEST and should be submitted via email to TAC at adacs.org.au . The subsequent application deadline will be approximately 4 weeks after that, but final proposals will be accepted only from those who participate in the EoI process. The review of EoI applications will proceed on a first-come-first-served basis and we welcome submissions any time from now until the deadline. Processing will commence immediately upon receipt. We strongly encourage unsuccessful applicants from previous rounds to consider applying for this round.
