The term "ESO user? should be taken very broadly to include anybody who has applied for ESO time, used ESO archive data, used ESO software, etc. The poll is the best way for me to provide your feedback to ESO on all ESO related matters. Your answers will be used to compile my report for Australia in advance of the annual Users Committee meeting on 26-27 April. Additionally, feel free to email me with any issues or comments that are not otherwise covered within the poll directly. Please forward this email to other interested parties you may know. Kind regards, Caroline PS: Don?t forget that the ESO proposal deadline (28 March, noon CEST) is also fast approaching. -- Dr Caroline Foster | ASTRO3D Fellow The University of Sydney Faculty of Science, Sydney Institute for Astrophysics 360B, A28 | The University of Sydney | NSW | +61 286 276 411 | +61 430 453 532 caroline.foster at sydney.edu.au | www.carofoster.com Office days: Monday, Tuesday (@AAO), Thursday, Friday INSPIRED ? the Campaign to support the University of Sydney sydney.edu.au/inspired CRICOS 00026A This email plus any attachments to it are confidential. I am the Australian Scientific Advisory Group (SAG) representative, and have been involved in the MSE project in some capacity for the past 6 years. We are at a phase where we want to get countries that have involvement in MSE re-engaged with the science,. This is with the broad purpose of updating the main science cases compared to the initial science cases published a couple of years ago. Informally you can get in touch with me if you would to know more, but otherwise please see the instructions below. Thanks, Aaron ---- Call for Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer Science Team Membership The Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer (MSE) is a proposed 11.25m wide field (1.5 square degree) telescope equipped with a suite of dedicated multi-object spectrographs that will obtain more than 4000 optical and near-infrared astronomical spectra per pointing. To join the Science Team to participate in the next phase of its science and survey development, please email the MSE Project Scientist, Alan McConnachie, at mcconnachie at mse.cfht.hawaii.edu (Subject line: Science Team Membership). Following a busy and successful 2017, which saw 10 different subsystem conceptual design reviews (CoDRs) and culminated in a successful Systems-Level Review in January 2018, MSE is wrapping up the Conceptual Design Phase and is preparing to move into the Preliminary Design Phase (PDP). A major science development phase will get underway in April/May 2018, that will be spearheaded by the international science team. Specifically, they will develop the first phase of the MSE Design Reference Survey (DRS). The DRS is planned as a 2 year observing campaign that will demonstrate the science impact of MSE in a broad range of science areas and will provide an excellent dataset for community science. It will describe and simulate an executable survey plan that addresses the key science described in the Detailed Science Case. The DRS will naturally undergo several iterations between now and first light of MSE: this first phase (nicknamed DRS1) will set the foundation for its future development. DRS1 will be supported by the Project Office and will use various simulation tools, including Integration Time Calculators, fiber-assigning software, and a telescope scheduler. It is anticipated that the DRS will become the first observing program on MSE come first light of the facility, and it will be used by the Project Office going forward to understand the consequences for science for all decisions relating to the engineering and operational development of MSE. More information about the development of the DRS and how to participate will be circulated to the members of the MSE Science Team shortly. This year?s ASA Annual Scientific Meeting will be held at Swinburne University in the last week of June, for which registration is currently open. As part of this process you can apply for a talk, and we hope you are considering doing so. The SOC recognises that many talks will naturally fall into distinct categories that we can break into sessions. This email is an open call for special session topics[*]. Specifically, we are looking for suggestions from groups/projects/institutions/etc within the community who feel they would benefit from hosting such a special session. If that describes you then please contact me. The SOC will be naturally grouping talks regardless. But i thought it valuable to do an open call to ensure the program is simultaneously as representative and as focused as possible. The available instrumentation covers the H to N-band with low to moderately high spectral resolution. Given that long-baseline optical interferometry observing techniques are still not widespread in the community VLTI schools are periodically organized. The next school will take place the 9^th to 14^th July in Lisbon. The school will provide practical hands-on training on observational programme preparation, data reduction and analysis. In addition to providing resources and support for our major data platforms (e.g. the All-Sky Virtual Observatory project, and the gSTAR data management and collaboration platform), ADACS will provide support to other small-to-intermediate scale tools/platforms by introducing scientific computing and software development as a service. Within Q3/4 2018, ADACS will provide the equivalent of a minimum of 1 full-time computational scientist as a resource to the community. A diversely qualified team will participate, with expertise covering a variety of areas including (but not limited to): system analysis and design, scientific computing, high-performance computing, data science, web development, large-scale scientific databases, cloud computing and scientific visualization. The allocation of these resources will be merit-based with the final evaluation to be performed by the Astronomy Data and Computing Services Time Allocation Committee. To prepare the community for effective proposals, we have split the application process into two stages: an expressions of interest (EoI) stage where we ask interested parties to submit a one-page (maximum) proposal outlining their scientific objectives, to which we will provide detailed feedback regarding feasibility, optimal approaches and required resources; and a subsequent round of formal submissions -- shaped by our input -- to be made to the ADACS TAC. We ask that EOI submissions be kept to no more than one page and provide the following: a concise description of the proposed project; expected benefits of the final software product; if possible, an initial estimate of the required resources. When considering projects for this process, we also ask that you keep the following in mind: all ADACS development will be open-source, and as such, made publicly available. Inquires can be directed to Greg Poole (gpoole at swin.edu.au ) or Jarrod Hurley (jhurley at swin.edu.au ). The deadline for EoI submissions is the 6th April 2018, 5 pm AEST and should be submitted via email to TAC at adacs.org.au . The subsequent application deadline will be approximately 4 weeks after that, but final proposals will be accepted only from those who participate in the EoI process. The review of EoI applications will proceed on a first-come-first-served basis and we welcome submissions any time from now until the deadline. Processing will commence immediately upon receipt. We strongly encourage unsuccessful applicants from previous rounds to consider applying for this round. ADACS is a collaboration between Swinburne University of Technology, Curtin University, and Pawsey Supercomputing Centre. It is funded under Astronomy National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) Program via Astronomy Australia Ltd (AAL). -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Please see an outline of vacant positions, a brief summary of each committee as well as links and closing dates for nominations. Australia Telescope User Committee (ATUC): ATUC is a group of ten to fifteen scientists, including two student members, that represents the users of the Australia Telescope National Facility. ATUC meetings are a forum for ATNF users to raise any issues regarding the operation of the facilities and to suggest changes to their operation. Also in discussions will be recommendations for ATNF future development plans & priorities. This committee meets twice a year, usually around May and October, with new members being solicited to join ATUC beginning from its October 2018 meeting. New members will finish their three year term after the May ATUC meeting in their last year. All students are appointed for one year (two meetings). ATNF Time Assignment Committee (TAC): The ATNF TAC is the committee that reviews and grades proposals for National Facility time on the ATNF telescopes: currently, Parkes, the Australia Telescope Compact Array, the Long Baseline Array, and host country time on the Tidbinbilla antennas. The ATNF TAC meets twice a year, generally in early February and late July. The term of an ATNF TAC member is usually 3 years, but may need to be staggered to ensure smooth turnover in membership. New members are being solicited to commence at the February 2019 meeting.
