The ARC Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav) is pleased to announce that we are holding a multi-messenger astronomy mini-workshop on Thursday 9th Nov 2017, where we will discuss this landmark result and the promising future for this field. We are very keen to include as wide as possible participation in this workshop from non-OzGrav Australian astronomers to maximise our contribution to the follow-up of future merger events. Note that follow-up observations could involve observations of putative host galaxies, and their interpretation, not just imaging of kilonovae. Details: Date: 9 November 2017 Time: 12:45PM-5:15PM AEDT (lunch from 12:00PM-12:45PM) Where: Level 3, Lecture theatre 301, Advanced Manufacturing & Design Centre (AMDC Building), Swinburne University of Technology, Hawthorn Map: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/V81oBdUworqMh9?domain=goo.gl If you wish to attend, register here. Registration closes CoB Friday 27th October. Note to OzGrav members: do not fill in that registration form, as you should have already registered via a separate form for OzGrav members if you intend to be at the retreat on 9th Nov. We encourage our non-OzGrav participants to volunteer to give a talk, which you can indicate when you register. I note that this event is part of the OzGrav annual retreat. In order to maximise participation from the broader astronomy community, we are grateful to Astronomy Australia Ltd for providing some funding for travel support. We are pleased to offer to cover the cost of flights for a limited number of attendees. If you wish to apply for travel support, please indicate this when you register. The official launch of OzGrav by the Minister of Education and Training will be held in the same location on the same day from 10:30AM - 12PM AEDT Thursday 9th Nov 2017. If want to arrive early and attend our launch, please register here. If you have any questions please contact me. The symposium is intended to showcase the excellent science being carried out by astronomers from Australia and further afield, and to promote discussion and collaboration amongst researchers from different institutions and levels of seniority. All members of the astronomical research community are welcome to attend and submit presentations. This year, the symposium will be held in Sydney NSW, in the lecture theatre at CSIRO's Marsfield site. This year we will also have a special event in the morning. Peter Robertson will give a talk on John Bolton's life and present his new book about John Bolton. We encourage all participants to register as soon as possible, and to submit an abstract for a talk. You can do this at the event website, located at: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/bZ89Bmu3KXGDFl?domain=atnf.csiro.au As with last year, we will be adopting a short-talk format: 3 minutes / one slide, plus 2 minutes for questions. You should aim to use this time to interest other attendees in some particular aspect of your work. You could do this by simply describing your current project. But feel free to take a different approach if you'd prefer to: Perhaps you'd rather talk about an idea for a project, a problem that you are facing, an unusual result, or some other interesting detail that has come up in the course of your investigations. We'd like attendees to view the presentations as a means to initiate further stimulating discussions during the break periods (and beyond). I look forward to seeing many of you in attendance. Further details will be provided at a later date. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. AAL is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee whose members are all Australian universities and research organisations with significant astronomical research capability. Its core business is to manage programmes which provide astronomers with access to national astronomy infrastructure, including data and computing infrastructure. Astronomy Data and Computing Services (ADACS) is a national initiative created by Astronomy Australia Limited (AAL) for the benefit of all Australian-based astronomers. The over-riding goal of ADACS is to provide astronomy-focused training, support and expertise to allow astronomers to maximise the scientific return from data and computing infrastructure. As part of its operations ADACS will from time-to-time have a need to allocate data and computing resources to the astronomy community, primarily through a call for applications and a merit-based evaluation of those applications. Resources to be allocated will likely include the provision of software support services but may also include other resources such as data hosting. The resource allocation process is to be overseen by the new allocation committee. AAL is currently restructuring its existing advisory committees. This Allocation Committee is independent of that restructure. Data and Computing Allocation Committee (DCAC) structure and governance The DCAC will comprise a chair and at least three normal members Membership of the DCAC will be approved and appointed by the AAL board. DCAC members are appointed for one or two year terms, with the possibility of renewal. The DCAC Chair position is for a one year term and will report to the AAL board. ADACS will provide administrative, logistical, and secretarial support for the DCAC The DCAC is expected to meet and allocates time twice per year as a minimum or as demand requires. Meetings will normally be via videocon/telecon. Applications AAL expects the committee?s collective expertise to span the breadth of astrophysics, computational techniques and data science areas. AAL is particularly interested in applications from people who have recognised expertise in a relevant area of astrophysics or data science:- demonstrated through publication, awards and/or software. If you consider yourself well placed to contribute to this committee via your expertise and ideas, and share AAL?s vision of wanting Australian astronomers to have access to the best research infrastructure, please email info at astronomyaustralia.org with a two A4 page application with: a brief CV, your relevant expertise, any relevant conflicts of interest. If you wish to be considered for the position of committee chair please make this clear in the application. AAL encourages applications from everyone with the appropriate expertise and skills, including early-to-mid career researchers.? AAL has? a minimum requirement of 25% female representation over all its committees, and encourages applications from women.? The deadline for applications is Friday 10th November 2017 at 4pm AEST.? Late applications will not be accepted. The AAL Board will seek to form the committee at its next meeting on November 20th 2017. Those who are successfully appointed will be informed shortly after. These diverse and significant benefits justify its continued operation for the foreseeable future. The full cost to the ANU Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) of operating the 2.3m telescope (including staff, maintenance and repairs) corresponds to approximately $1200 per night. To defray this cost, RSAA is offering priority on the 2.3m telescope to paying customers from Australia and elsewhere, while simultaneously ensuring a level of open access to astronomers at all Australian institutions. 50% of the telescope time will be allocated to paid priority proposals, which will need to contribute $400 per night towards the running costs of the telescope. The remaining 50% of the time is open-access and remains free. To be eligible to apply for open-access time, 50% or more of the proposers must be based at Australian institutions. In future years the price of a priority night will increase and the fraction of open-access nights will decrease.
