In addition to providing resources and support for our major data platforms (e.g. the All-Sky Virtual Observatory project, and the gSTAR data management and collaboration platform), ADACS will provide support to other small-to-intermediate scale tools/platforms by introducing scientific computing and software development as a service. Within Q1/2 2018, ADACS will provide the equivalent of a minimum of 1 full-time computational scientist as a resource to the community. A diversely qualified team will participate, with expertise covering a variety of areas including (but not limited to): system analysis and design, scientific computing, high-performance computing, data science, web development, large-scale scientific databases, cloud computing and scientific visualization. The allocation of these resources will be merit-based with the final evaluation to be performed by the Astronomy Data and Computing Services Time Allocation Committee. To prepare the community for effective proposals, we have split the application process into two stages: an expressions of interest (EOI) stage where we ask interested parties to submit a one-page proposal outlining their scientific objectives, to which we will provide detailed feedback regarding feasibility, optimal approaches and required resources; and a subsequent round of formal submissions -- shaped by our input -- to be made to the ADACS TAC. We ask that EOI submissions be kept to one page and provide the following: * a concise description of the proposed project; * expected benefits of the final software product; * if possible, an initial estimate of the required resources. When considering projects for this process, we also ask that you keep the following in mind: all ADACS development will be open-source, and as such, made publicly available. Inquires can be directed to Greg Poole (gpoole at swin.edu.au) or Amr Hassan (ahassan at swin.edu.au). The deadline for EOI submissions is the 30th October 2017, 5 pm AEST and should be submitted via email to TAC at adacs.org.au. We expect the deadline for the applications to be shortly after that. The review of applications will proceed on a first-come-first-served basis and we welcome submissions any time from now until the deadline. Processing will commence immediately upon receipt. We strongly encourage unsuccessful applicants from previous rounds to consider applying for this round. ADACS is a collaboration between Swinburne University of Technology, Curtin University, and Pawsey Supercomputing Centre. Over the past twenty years, astronomers have observed more than 3,000 extrasolar planets, consequently revealing the diversity of planets that exist in the universe. The ever-increasing number of detections continues to drive exoplanet research forward and we are currently on the cusp of a technological revolution where near-future space and ground-based observatories will allow an unprecedented opportunity to further explore and characterise smaller, potentially habitable exoplanets for signs of life. The key questions to answer are: * Do protoplanetary disks include compositional trends that imprint on future planets? * What should future observations of Solar System bodies focus on? * Where should we search for nearby habitable Earth-like planets? * How can the science of the remote detection of biosignatures be advanced? * What can our knowledge of life on Earth tell us about life elsewhere in the universe? The school and workshop, jointly sponsored by ANU and PSL, will bring leading experts from France, Australia and around the world to review these topics and identify new avenues for answering these questions. The outcomes of this workshop will inform future collaborative projects between Australia and France in these fields. The first is a 3-day hands-on on Introduction to computing and data science for astronomers held 13 to 15 November at Curtin University, Perth. The second is a 3-day workshop on Introduction to high performance computing (HPC) for astronomers held 27 to 29 November at Swinburne University, Melbourne. Both workshops are open for registration now, further details on each workshop can be found below. I would also like to use this opportunity to remind you that the challenge submissions for the 2017 Sky Mining Hackathon close on Monday 16 October. Suggested challenges could include generating solutions to existing algorithms that are non-optimal, inefficient, or non-scalable, data visualisation challenges, or even a project you wanted to start but are not sure how. The following is an example suggested by Dr. Paul Hancock involving efficient catalogue cross-matching: Variations in the brightness of objects in the sky over time can be the result of a range of exciting astronomical phenomena ? from exploding stars to black holes. Identification of these events from their light curves means that we need to first form these light curves by joining many catalogues. This joining, or cross-matching, process presents a number of challenges ? uncertainties in position, source confusion, missing data, and weird shaped sources. We currently have a few methods that work OK when the catalogues are very well behaved, but which are either very slow, or make many errors. Creating an effective, efficient, and scalable solution would greatly assist in the ongoing research into these objects. An ideal solution would be something that could run within a database and updated as new catalogues are added, but even a standalone script would be of great benefit.
