This week's series of ESO Community Days around Australia has been
extremely successful and well attended. On behalf of the Department of
Industry, Innovation, and Science, the AAO, and AAL I would like to
thank ESO's Director for Science Dr Rob Ivison, and the Head of the
Observing Programmes Office Dr Ferdinando Patat, for making themselves
available to share their knowledge with the community. We also thank the
various host institutions in each city.
We would like to highlight some of the many opportunities for Australia
in this Strategic Partnership with ESO that Rob and Ferdinando presented:
* First, a reminder that the proposal deadline for Period 101
<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/Db1pBJUZmJWnuW?domain=aao.gov.au> (Apr-Sep 2018) is Thursday
28 Sep at 12:00 CEST (20:00 AEST).
* Presentations by Rob on "Current Facilities and Future Perspectives
<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/87W8BlUA0W7zca?domain=aao.gov.au>", and by
Ferdinando on "Time Allocation at ESO
<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/Qv1bBRfzg5bZFg?domain=aao.gov.au>" are
available. Recordings of their presentations with these slides are
available by request from ITSO.
* ITSO has compiled an ESO FAQ <https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/xMnXB1Ulk10Yck?domain=aao.gov.au>,
with lots of helpful hints for new users.
* ESO offers outstanding Fellowships
<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/M41aBLUV43G6ub?domain=eso.org>
for early-career scientists at ESO's Headquarters in Garching near
Munich, Germany, and at ESO's astronomy centre in Santiago, Chile.
In addition ESO are now offering Engineering and Technology Research
Fellowships <https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/Ov16BlfzQLOWF3?domain=recruitment.eso.org>
for those looking to play a part in ESO's R&D projects. Applications
for all Fellowships close on 15 October 2017.
* ESO operates a Studentship Programme
<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/9OVQB5UMNZLrHV?domain=eso.org>
for PhD students enrolled in member states and Australia to come to
ESO to work and study under the co-supervision of an ESO staff
astronomer. Applications close 15 May and 15 Nov each year.
* ESO has a Scientific Visitor Programme
<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/lqmYBbSXzrgMUo?domain=eso.org>
for visits of weeks to months in either Garching or Santiago.
Potential applicants are encouraged to directly contact any ESO
staff member or fellow with whom they may wish to collaborate
<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/z4nRBmULR91etV?domain=eso.org> and coordinate
their planned visit with them. Applications may be submitted at any
time.
* ESO organises and sponsors a wide variety of workshops and
conferences <https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/rNKaBYfDbGLZFp?domain=eso.org> each
year, mainly but not exclusively in Europe. A call
<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/ZXg4BxU0q3nvtM?domain=eso.org>
for members of the ESO community to team up with ESO staff and
fellows in Chile and/or in Germany to submit proposals for future
workshops is issued in March each year.
