ASA Members living in or travelling to Queensland may be interested to know of USQ’s upcoming (and growing) springtime astronomy outreach festival:

Festival of Astronomy & Space
3-10 October 2017

The Festival includes public talks by Tamara Davis (UQ), Jonti Horner, Carolyn Brown, Belinda Nicholson (USQ), Fred Watson (AAO), Giovanna Tinetti (UCL/Twinkle Space Mission), and Douglas Hudgins (NASA). A wide range of topics will be covered and occur at different venues (USQ Toowoomba, USQ Springfield and the Brisbane Planetarium). All events are free but registration is needed for individual events.

For those needing it here are some accommodation suggestions:

Springfield: https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/xMnXB1UxNrQvfW?domain=springfieldlakeshotel.com.au
(For inner Brisbane accommodation there are many options to choose from.)

The Festival corresponds to World Space Week 4-10 October and some related space shows happening at the Brisbane Planetarium:

ASA Members may also be interested to know that for the timely provision of information USQ now has an Astrophysics Group blog at:

In particular this site has some information about the Festival and USQ’s new:

  * PhD Scholarships (Astronomical and Space Sciences) for domestic students
  * PhD Scholarships (Astronomical and Space Sciences) for international students (including tuition-fee scholarships for distance education study)

Finally it is noted that PhD Scholarship vacancies close soon (29 September) so anyone wishing to apply should get in touch quickly. Places are very limited.
