      2018A Call for Magellan Proposals

Proposals for Australian access to the Magellan telescopes for Semester
2018A (mid-Jan to mid-Jul 2018) are due by:

*5:00pm AEST on Friday 6 October 2017**
*
(A separate call for Blanco proposals in Semester 2018A with a 29 Sep
2017 deadline was issued earlier - please see
https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/NX12BDUYxYwVfx?domain=aao.gov.au. A reminder also that ESO
proposals for Period 101 (April-Sep 2018) are due by 28 Sep 2017 - see
https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/bZ89Bmu4047Qt6?domain=aao.gov.au

The instruments normally available on the two Magellan telescopes are
listed on the ITSO Magellan instrumentation
<https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/Jb1WBnUxDxMNud?domain=aao.gov.au> page, but applicants
should bear in mind the following for Semester 2018A:

  * A new CCD is currently being commissioned with the Planet Finding
Spectrograph. Contact Jeff Crane (crane - at - carnegiescience.edu) for
    the latest update before applying.
  * There will likely be a single MegaCam f/5 block; a single MagAO
block in the April bright time; and perhaps 2 M2FS blocks in 2018A,
    depending on demand.
  * The Parallel Imager for Southern Cosmology Observations (PISCO
    <https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/Xq1VBlSv3v76Ux?domain=pisco.physics.harvard.edu>) provides simultaneous imaging
    in the 4 SDSS bands g', r', i', and z' over a 7.3 x 5.4 arcminute
field of view at 0.11 arcsec/pixel. PISCO is a PI instrument and is
only available via collaborative arrangement with the instrument
team. Contact Tony Stark (astark - at - cfa.harvard.edu) before
    submitting a proposal.

In recent semesters demand for instruments mounted on the Clay telescope
has significantly exceeded that for instruments on the Baade telescope.
Applicants are encouraged to consider whether their science might also
be possible using the instruments on Baade (IMACS, FourStar, FIRE,
MagE), should their preferred instrument on Clay not be available due to
scheduling constraints.

Complete information about all Magellan instrumentation on offer, travel
funding, and the application procedure is available at
https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/78eDB7UKOK6Ls2?domain=aao.gov.au. For any enquiries about Australian
usage of Magellan please contact the AAO's International Telescopes
Support Office (itso at aao.gov.au).
