Under the Strategic Partnership between Australia and the European Southern Observatory (ESO), signed in July 2017, Australia is entitled to representation on four ESO governance bodies: The ESO Council, Finance Committee, Scientific Technical Committee, and Users Committee.

On behalf of the Australian Government Department of Industry, Innovation and Science (DIIS), AAL is calling for nominations from Australian-based astronomers to represent Australia on the ESO Council.

Potential candidates may apply for this ESO Council position, and either/both of the positions with the ESO Scientific Technical Committee and Users Committee <https://protect-au.mimecast.com/s/xMnXB1Ux0G1ZTD?domain=astronomyaustralia.org.au> currently being advertised by AAL.

The AAL Board will consider all applicants based on merit, and recommend a nomination to the DIIS for the ESO Council Astronomer role. The successful nominee will be notified by the 18th September 2017.

The term of appointment for the ESO Council is three years. Representatives are expected to be available to attend all meetings of the Council over their appointment term, starting with the next council meeting on 10-11 October 2017, in Paris, France.
