The Workshops will free to attend and are open to ALL students undertaking Honours, Masters and PhD projects in Astronomy/Astrophysics. The workshops will be held in Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Perth. REGISTRATION NOW OPEN or visit: http://www.caastro.org/event/2017-writing Workshop Summary Writing scientific papers is an integral part of working in research, but many students receive no formal training in this area. This workshop is a one-day course designed to introduce you to some of the key aspects of putting a scientific paper together. The workshop will be broken down into three sessions: Session 1: Structure Tips and tricks about how to approach writing, with exercises about communicating your work effectively through clear figures and intriguing abstracts. Session 2: Grammar & Style How to refine your writing to make it easy for the reader, including tips on removing clutter and utilising punctuation. Apply your new knowledge and edit some of your own work at the end of the session! Session 3: Peer Review Learn about the submission and refereeing process. What are referees looking for in your work? What kind of outcomes are there? We even include some real referee reports to give you a feel for what to expect. Remote participation is possible if necessary, and primary carer support is available. Prior to reviewing proposals, ATAC also meets briefly by videocon to review unconscious bias issues. The term of an ATAC member is generally for 3 years, but may be staggered to ensure smooth turnover in membership. The AAO is transitioning from the government to the research sector during 2018 - this is not expected to impact the membership or continuing operation of the ATAC at this time. You can find the current membership of ATAC and their terms of office at: http://www.aao.gov.au/science/observing/ATAC In reviewing nominations for ATAC membership, the AAO Director and Advisory Committee will consider the diversity and range of scientific expertise required for the committee?s effective operation, and will not normally have more than one representative from any given institution.Their recommendations are submitted to the Secretary of the Department of Industry, Innovation & Science who, if necessary will appoint a Chair from among the Committee members. The Director will then appoint a Deputy Chair. If you wish to be considered for membership of ATAC, please send your name and a brief summary (less than 50 words) of your specialisations to the Secretary of ATAC, Ms Helen Woods (helen.woods at aao.gov.au ) by COB Friday 4 August 2017.
