Dear ASA Members

We would be grateful if you could bring the following to the attention of interested students.

Two PhD scholarships, funded by the Australian Research Council, are available to work on observational studies of galaxy formation and evolution. In particular, the projects will focus on the formation of lenticular (S0) galaxies.
One PhD position will be based at the Centre for Astrophysics & Supercomputing at Swinburne University (Melbourne) under the supervision of Professor Duncan Forbes and Professor Warrick Couch. The other PhD position will be at the School of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Queensland (Brisbane) under the supervision of Professor Michael Drinkwater. Both PhD students will become part of a larger project investigating lenticular galaxy formation from both an observational and simulation perspective. The simulations are lead by Dr Kenji Bekki at the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research at the University of Western Australia (Perth).
The successful candidates will need to have excellent grades and demonstrated potential for astronomical research. Any experience in imaging and/or spectroscopy would be an advantage. The successful candidates will have the opportunity to observe with large telescopes such as the AAT and Keck telescopes. International candidates may need to pass english language requirements of the respective University.
The PhD scholarship is tax-free at around AUD $27K per year with tuition fees waived for 3 years (an extension of an extra 6 months may also be possible). Some funds are available for telescope and conference attendance.
Applicants should send a CV, a transcript of grades of past degree(s) and a brief statement of research interests and skills relevant to the PhD project. Applicants should inlcude the email addresses of 2-3 people that can be contacted as referees. Applicants should also indicate if they have a preference for either the Swinburne University or the University of Queensland position.
Enquiries about the PhD scholarship and project should be sent to Duncan Forbes (dforbes at swin.edu.au<mailto:dforbes at swin.edu.au>) for Swinburne University or Michael Drinkwater (m.drinkwater at uq.edu.au<mailto:m.drinkwater at uq.edu.au>) for University of Queensland.
The deadline for applications is 31st May 2017.
