Please contact us if you have any queries. Stuart Ryder Head of International Telescopes Support itso at aao.gov.au --------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Proposals for Australian community access to the Keck telescopes in Semester 2016A Proposals for Australian community access to the Keck telescopes in Hawaii for Semester 2016A (1 Feb - 31 July 2016) are due by *5:00pm AEST, Thursday 10 September 2015.** * Background In 2015 Astronomy Australia Ltd (AAL) announced that a total of fifteen nights per year on the Keck telescopes will be available to Australian-based astronomers during 2016 and 2017 via a national program. This time has been made available by the W. M. Keck Observatory to AAL via the Australian National University. The collaboration is made possible through the support of the Australian Government's National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy, via the Department of Education and Training, and an Australian Government astronomy research infrastructure grant, via the Department of Industry and Science. AAL has engaged the Australian Astronomical Observatory's International Telescope Support Office to manage and support this programme within Australia. In addition, the Australian National University (ANU), Swinburne University of Technology (SUT) and AAL, who each have access to fifteen nights per year on Keck, have agreed to form the Keck Time Allocation Committee (KTAC). KTAC will provide a single interface for Australian-based astronomers who wish to request access to the total of forty-five Keck-nights available per year in 2016 and 2017. This model is designed to facilitate larger programmes and broader collaborations to maximise the scientific return from Australia's engagement with the Keck telescopes. All Australian-based astronomers are eligible for AAL time on Keck, including those at SUT and ANU. How to apply Details on how to prepare and submit a KTAC application for 2016A, as well as a summary of instrumentation on offer can be found at http://ausgo.aao.gov.au/keck.html Applicants should also consult the Keck Observatory instrument availability page (http://www2.keck.hawaii.edu/observing/instavail.html) and the Keck Observatory pages for individual instruments (http://www2.keck.hawaii.edu/inst/index.php) for more complete information. Principal Investigators granted AAL time by KTAC will be expected to travel to the Keck Observatory headquarters in Waimea on the Big Island of Hawaii. Suitably-experienced observers are invited to make use of the dedicated Keck remote observing facilities at SUT or at ANU. ITSO will reimburse observer travel costs to Waimea or toS one of these remote observing facilities. Need Help? For general enquiries concerning Australian access to Keck, please contact the International Telescopes Support Office (itso at aao.gov.au). For enquiries about a specific instrument please contact the instrument master listed on each instrument's home page, or contact the ITSO to be directed to a local expert if you need a rapid response. --------------------------------------------------------------------- *As of 1 July 2015, the Australian Gemini Office is now the International Telescopes Support Office. ASKAP Early Science is a program of observations designed to explore new scientific parameters with ASKAP before the construction of the array is complete, and also to produce scientifically useful data. It will start when an array of twelve ASKAP antennas fitted with CSIRO's Mk II phased array feeds (the instrument known as ASKAP-12) has been commissioned and scientifically verified. Early science observations will be carried out in parallel with the deployment of the Mk II phased array feeds on further ASKAP antennas. The workshop website is now live: http://www.atnf.csiro.au/research/workshops/2015/ASKAPEarlyScience/ Please register now if you plan to attend. Attendance is free of charge and a videoconference link will be available. The program will feature invited presentations from science teams who are engaged with ASKAP early science planning. There will also be updates from CSIRO about the scope and delivery of the ASKAP early science program. I look forward to welcoming you to Marsfield in October. I will be serving as the Chair of the Scientific Organising Committee for the Harley Wood School for Astronomy 2016 (HWSA SOC 2016), and I am currently looking to recruit student members to join the committee. This email is a call for nominations for membership of the HWSA SOC 2016. The job of the SOC is to create a program of talks and workshops for the School that will be valuable to the student membership of the ASA, regardless of their stage of study, area of research, and career goals. Specifically, the SOC will determine the central theme of the HWSA, decide on the talk/workshop topics, and find speakers to give talks and/or hold workshops. I am keen for the SOC to have a healthy representation of minority groups* within the community. For this reason, I would like to encourage all potential nominators to take note of students you know to be members of minority groups, and consider nominating them to serve on the SOC. I would also like to encourage any students who are particularly keen on joining the SOC to self-nominate. Members will be selected based on the information provided in the nomination form. The selection process will take into account the following: * whether or not the nominee will make an effort to contribute (based on answer to the question, "Why do you think the nominee should be considered for membership of the HWSA SOC 2016?") * nominee's gender * whether or not the nominee is a member of one or more minority groups (please include this information in your answer to the above question) * nominee's institution (to ensure representation of as many institutions as possible, especially those that have not had representation in recent years) * nominee's research area (to ensure representation of as many distinct research areas as possible) Nobody will be disadvantaged as a result of having fewer nominations than others. The nomination form can be accessed here: https://ero.wufoo.com/forms/z1uo66jj1wgqozo/ I will be closing the form at 5 pm on Friday 18 September (AEST). No nominations will be accepted after that time. Thanks for helping me assemble the SOC! Best regards, Eromanga *Note: "minority group" as used in this email refers to (but is not limited to) gender minorities, racial/ethnic minorities, cultural/religious minorities within the student community, mature age students, LGBTI students, and students who have a disability. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
