Dear colleagues,

The organisers of the 2014 Astronomical Society of Australia Annual Science Meeting have generously allocated the morning of Tuesday July 22 for a session to discuss the development of the 2016-2025 Decadal Plan. This email concerns preparation for this session, including links to draft working group reports.

The eleven Decadal Plan Working Groups formed in late 2013 have been charged with considering how best to position Australia in the international astronomical landscape of the coming decade. Specifically, each was requested to compile a Working Group report that:

1. Reports on progress against objectives of the previous Decadal Plan
2. Provides a stock take of current or future capabilities/resources in the area
3. Identifies any new national or international opportunities/requirements in the area over the period 2016-2025
4. Suggests strategies and the resourcing levels required to maximise these new opportunities

The primary method of community consultation during the decadal planning process has been via a series of town hall meetings. During February, March and April, 30 town hall meetings were held across the country with an excellent response. These meetings, and additional feedback and comment from members of the community have been distilled by the Working Groups, who have produced draft Working Group reports.

Each of the Working Group chairs will be presenting the findings of their draft reports at the ASA Decadal Plan session next Tuesday, alongside moderated discussions. The primary goal of this session is to seek broad input that will allow the Working Groups to finalise their reports.

The full schedule for the Decadal Planning session at the ASA can be found on the ASA conference web site. The schedule is also reproduced on the ASA 2014 Decadal Plan Session page on at

http://australianastronomydecadalplan.org/home/2014-asa-decadal-plan-session-2/

This page includes links to draft Working Group reports. Members of the community are encouraged to read these reports prior to the Decadal Planning session.

Best regards,

Stuart
