The research project will be carried out in the framework of a project funded by the MERAC foundation, and will focus on the development of an available hierarchical galaxy formation model, with emphasis on the modelling of star formation and stellar feedback. The project will likely include the analysis of available hydrodynamical simulations. Additional information and enquiries about the scientific project can be addressed to G. De Lucia (delucia at oats.inaf.it) A link to the announcement and to the application form, as well as detailed instructions on the application procedure, can be found at: http://adlibitum.oats.inaf.it/delucia/PostDoc.html The deadline for application is: April 30, 2014 The appointment is for two years, with a likely extension depending on funding availability and performance. The appointment can start as early as October 1st, 2014. The annual gross salary will be 29,640 EUR, more than adequate for local costs of living. Travel funds will be available. The area of Trieste offers a rich scientific environment which includes the University of Trieste and Udine, SISSA, INFN, and ICTP. It also offers good computer facilities and access to supercomputer resources. Further information about current areas of interest at INAF-OATs can be found at: http://www.oats.inaf.it/en/research-themes INAF-OATs is an Affirmative Action Institution. (apologies if you receive this email more than once) Registration and abstract submission are now open! Please feel free to forward this announcement to other colleagues. Best regards, the SOC *********************************************************************** Second announcement of the conference: The Role of Hydrogen in the Evolution of Galaxies Kuching, Borneo (Malaysia), September 15-19, 2014 website: http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/research/conferences/gas2014 Registration and abstract submission are now open at: http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/research/conferences/gas2014/registration.php Important dates: Talks/Posters submission deadline: May 15 2014 Registration closes: Jul 18 2014 Rationale As the most abundant element in the Universe, hydrogen is an ubiquitous tracer of structures at various scales and plays a fundamental role in galaxy formation. Accretion of hydrogen from the intergalactic medium (IGM) feeds galaxies with the raw material necessary for the formation of stars. Environmental effects and complex internal mechanisms, such as supernovae or AGN feedback, affect the evolution cycle of hydrogen and consequently the physical properties and appearance of galaxies. Observations of hydrogen in its various forms (atomic, ionised or molecular), along with refined models and simulations, are essential to better assess the role of hydrogen in the formation and evolution of galaxies. This conference will bring together observers and theorists to review our current understanding in the field, and discuss the main science questions that can be addressed in the pre-SKA era. The scientific topics covered at this conference will include: - Evolution of hydrogen in the cosmological context - Environmental effects and the role of groups and clusters - Outflows, accretion and the IGM - The ISM and the link with star formation - The Milky Way and the Local Group - State-of-the-art surveys. In light of real performance figures and the survey landscape of 2014 the SkyMapper survey strategy is updated to deliver the primary science value more quickly. This is the time to look at early data and discuss methods of data analysis and ways of sharing the data. The workshop is open to the Australian astronomy community, but capped at 50 participants. It aims to bring together makers and users of the survey, so that it may be used as effectively as possible. The format will include presentations, moderated discussions and break-out mini-workshops. We want to present our core services and discuss the possibility of value-added data products developed jointly with the community. We will also report on science applications with commissioning data and help the community to evaluate science opportunities with the survey. Contributions are welcome, but not required for attendance. Please see the website http://www.caastro.org/event/2014-skymapper for registration. With best wishes, B. Schmidt, D. Sturgess, K. The meeting will be hosted by the Macquarie Research Centre for Astronomy, Astrophysics and Astrophotonics (MQAAAstro) http://physics.mq.edu.au/astronomy/ at Macquarie University in Sydney, NSW. The 2014 ASM will feature a full scientific program including a special half-day session on the Decadal Plan. Career and community sessions will be held but there is also an excellent program of additional activities planned involving our planetarium, observatory, holograms and a special art-gallery exhibition entitled ?Fields of Vision: Art and Astronomy?. As usual there will be meetings of the various chapters of the ASA including, ANITA, EPOC and Women in Astronomy (WiA). Relevant details, including the list of invited speakers, will be posted on the ASM website in due course. HARLEY WOOD WINTER SCHOOL The Harley Wood Winter School will be held immediately prior to the ASM from July 17th to 20th in the lovely Collaroy beach suburb of northern Sydney so bring a wet-suit and surf-board. The theme for this year's Harley Wood Winter School is ?Bridging the Gaps: Integrating astronomy for the future?.
