Due to the incessant need of humanity to control the Sun, in some parts of Australia daylight savings began last weekend, which i failed to factor in to my WA->VIC time conversion before sending the below ANITA lecture announcement. The correct time for Aaron's lecture is tomorrow (Wednesday) 1PM ADST (i.e. one hour later than previously stated). The ANITA webpage for the lecture is now live at http://anita.edu.au/lectures/; follow the links from there. Aaron's slides will be available to download shortly before we begin. This lecture will be the second in a series of four, which together will build a full Bayesian framework with applications to astronomy using R. In this lecture we investigate the basic foundations of Bayes Theory, with emphasis on worked practical examples. The lecture concludes with two famous statistical problems, which the attentive student should be able to tackle with their new Bayesian toolkit. > -------------------------------- > > The lecture will be held through Google Hangouts on Air. > You'll first need a Google account (e.g. gmail). The 150th anniversary celebrations will be formally launched on Saturday afternoon, 23 November, by the Governor of Victoria, His Excellency the Honorable Alex Chernov, AC, QC. Events will include tours, activities and entertainment, along with an historic re-enactment recounting the founding of the Observatory and its work. The Melbourne Observatory held global significance and was vital to the early development of Melbourne and Victoria during the second half of the 19th century. It was home to the Great Melbourne Telescope installed in 1869, and was for decades the largest fully steerable telescope in the world. The seminar will explore the significance of colonial astronomy in Australia, including the role of women in colonial astronomy. It will discuss the heritage value of the Observatory, along with the meteorological and geophysics work carried out there. An update on the work being carried out to restore the Great Melbourne Telescope will also be presented. This project is a collaboration between Museum Victoria, the Astronomical Society of Victoria and the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne. Invited Speakers Dr Richard Gillespie, Head, Humanities Department, Museum Victoria Dr Nick Lomb, Curator, Sydney Observatory Mr Greg Lowe, Astronomical Officer, Perth Observatory Ms Toner Stevenson, Manager, Sydney Observatory Mr Matthew Churchward, Senior Curator, Technology and Innovation, Museum Victoria Bookings are essential as places are limited. STA MEMBER SKILLS WORKSHOP IS ON AGAIN Date: Thu, 10 Oct 2013 13:42:15 +1100 From: Catriona Jackson To: STA CC: Shannon Wong Dear STA Presidents and members, It is on again! Another of the highly-successful Science & Technology Australia Members Skills Workshops will be held on Thursday November 21 this year, the day before the STA Annual General Meeting, in Canberra. *The workshop is free and offered exclusively to members. * Building on the 2011 initiative, STA will again provide a day-long series of talks on the key issues in running a scientific society or similar organisation. Issues covered will include: * Society governance * Legal issues * Cost effective websites * The growing world of social media and how and why to use it * Declining membership numbers, and * Event and conference planning. Acknowledged experts in these areas will present talks, with plenty of time for questions and discussion. A new feature this time will be member society case studies, where a society reports back on their experience of making change. Discussion will focus on how well the process worked, and the ultimate impact. A detailed program will be available closer to the date and will be placed on STA?s website, but put your name down as there are limited places. *What:* STA Members Hands-On Skills workshop. *When:* Thursday November 21, 2013, 9.30am ? 5pm. *Where:* Canberra (exact location TBC) *Who should attend:* Any STA member who has a role in running a society or similar group or would like to know more about what it involves. All STA members are eligible. *How do I sign up:* Formal registrations will open very soon, but if you would like to register your interest to guarantee a place, please do so by emailing shannon.wong at sta.org.au Yours Sincerely, -- A.Prof. Andrew Hopkins, Head of AAT Science Australian Astronomical Observatory P.O. Dear Students of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Do you question the unknown? Do you prefer logic and reason over chaos? We would like to invite you the the 11th Stromlo Student Seminars, with this year's theme being inspired by the adventures of Star Trek: To boldy discover what no one has researched before. Curiosity compels us to search out what hasn't been discovered before. A passion for research in astronomy and astrophysics drives us to explore the unknown, whether in our Galaxy or beyond! If you are interested in presenting your research log to fellow students please read ahead! The 11th Annual Mt Stromlo Student Christmas Seminars! ************************************************************************** WHAT? A two day workshop to strengthen skills important for your research degree WHO? Any astronomy or related physics student in Australia - Undergrad, Honours, Masters, and PhD level WHERE? Mt. Stromlo Observatory, ANU, Canberra WHEN? 21st & 22nd November 2013 ************************************************************************** Day 1: We have organised for the Academic Skills and Learning Centre at ANU to run a session on developing research skills essential for completing a research degree, either Honours, Masters or PhD. These skills include critical reading, journal writing as well as how to write a literature review. We will also take a tour of the Advanced Instrumentation Technology Centre at Mt Stromlo Observatory where ANU is helping to build the next large telescope, the Giant Magellan Telescope in Chile, as part of an international collaboration. ANU is constructing one of the first instruments to be used with the telescope as well as developing adaptive optics which are critical to success of the telescope. Day 2: Then it's your turn - this annual day of student talks gives you a 15 minute opportunity to talk to a group of your peers on whatever topic you like, related to the theme or not. Prizes will be given for those talks voted as the best science content, best use of the theme, and best overall talk. ************************************************************************** Registration is free, and food will be provided throughout the two days. Dinner on Thursday night will also be provided. Please indicate when you are registering if you'd like to attend the dinner. Some travel and accommodation support will also be available; contact the committee if you would like details on financial support. To register, visit our website at www.mso.anu.edu.au/xmas13. The deadline for registration is the 8th of November. If you would like a talk on day 2, you can indicate so when you register, or email us separately. The seminars are designed for all astronomy and astrophysics undergrad/graduate students, whether you have anything to talk about or just come to watch and listen, the invitation is open to you. Honours and Masters students might want to take the opportunity to come and find out what being a PhD student is really like! So please, come along to this year's Mt Stromlo Student Christmas Seminars - catch up with students from other institutes, improve your research skills and practise your public speaking skills. Please direct any questions to the organising committee at the email address xmas13 at mso.anu.edu.au. For travel and accommodation information please visit our website. Keep checking our website for up-to-date information. We hope to see you all in November! Live long and prosper!
