Dear Colleagues,

You will recall prior to the Federal Election STA, along with the Australian 
Academy of Science, led the formation of the Research Alliance, involving the 
peak bodies in science, higher education, social sciences and humanities, as 
well as our most eminent scholars from all four learned academies, and our 
most recent Nobel Laureate Brian Schmidt.

The aim of the Alliance was to strengthen our voice and influence on high 
level issues, by joining with other key groups, urging bipartisan support for 
a long-term, sustainable plan for science and research.

Many of you sent letters to MPs and joined in the campaign to illustrate the 
importance of science and research and of the fundamental principles outlined 
in the Research Alliance statement, made at Parliament House.

Since June the group has grown to over a dozen members, and after a meeting at 
the Shine Dome last week we have resolved to continue to advocate on behalf of 
science and all other forms of research as the engine room of national 
prosperity.

More details will be included in a new and improved STA newsletter, which will 
be coming your way mid-month.

We have written to both Ministers Macfarlane and Pyne, and have issued the 
media release attached today. It is of course, also on the STA website.
