The aim of the Alliance was to strengthen our voice and influence on high level issues, by joining with other key groups, urging bipartisan support for a long-term, sustainable plan for science and research. Many of you sent letters to MPs and joined in the campaign to illustrate the importance of science and research and of the fundamental principles outlined in the Research Alliance statement, made at Parliament House. Since June the group has grown to over a dozen members, and after a meeting at the Shine Dome last week we have resolved to continue to advocate on behalf of science and all other forms of research as the engine room of national prosperity. More details will be included in a new and improved STA newsletter, which will be coming your way mid-month. We have written to both Ministers Macfarlane and Pyne, and have issued the media release attached today. It is of course, also on the STA website. http://scienceandtechnologyaustralia.org.au/in-the-media/building-a-smart-productive-future-2/ Regards, *Catriona Jackson Chief Executive Officer Science & Technology Australia* -- A.Prof. Andrew Hopkins, Head of AAT Science Australian Astronomical Observatory P.O. This coming Wednesday at 12pm (AEST) ANITA will hold its next online lecture. All are welcome to join! The target audience will range from undergrad to postdoc, however anyone interested is sure to get something out of it. More details (including lecture notes and slides) will be available closer to the day at: http://anita.edu.au/lectures/ -------------------------------- Title: Bayes Theory Speaker: Aaron Robotham (aaron.robotham at uwa.edu.au) Abstract: For those who don't know, R is a very powerful statistical programming language. This lecture will be the second in a series of four, which together will build a full Bayesian framework with applications to astronomy using R. In this lecture we investigate the basic foundations of Bayes Theory, with emphasis on worked practical examples. The lecture concludes with two famous statistical problems, which the attentive student should be able to tackle with their new Bayesian toolkit. -------------------------------- The lecture will be held through Google Hangouts on Air. 1. You'll first need a Google account (e.g. gmail). Log in to it. 2. If you've never done a Google Hangout before you'll need to install a plugin for your browser. See https://www.google.com/tools/dlpage/hangoutplugin 3. On Google+ search for "Anita Chapter" and head to our page. 4. Alternatively, go directly to our Chapter page here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/104967001091880466806/posts 5. You'll see a post for the Hangout on Air at around 12pm - hit play and enjoy! Some hints for a better experience: - You can breakout the small video window on the Google+ page by opening it in YouTube. This gives you a much bigger view. - Post any comments/questions under the video in the comments box on the Google+ or YouTube page. We'll try and answer them in real-time. - I don't believe that comments are updated automatically; you may need to reload the page to see the latest. All lectures will be hosted on our ANITA YouTube page for later viewing. Thanks, and see you there!
