From matthew.colless at anu.edu.au Mon Sep 23 13:58:15 2013 From: matthew.colless at anu.edu.au (Matthew Colless) Date: Mon, 23 Sep 2013 03:58:15 +0000 Subject: [ASA] Stromlo Distinguished Visitor program 2014 Message-ID: <0917B6B1-245A-477A-9C40-E35346346785@anu.edu.au> Colleagues, I'm happy to announce the launch of the Stromlo Distinguished Visitor program. The aim of the program is to bring distinguished scientists (including instrument scientists/engineers) to the ANU's Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics for periods of 1-6 months in order to support extended interactions and research collaborations. This program complements the normal support for short-term visitors. The guidelines for the program for 2014 (effectively the announcement of opportunity) can be found at http://rsaa.anu.edu.au/stromlo-distinguished-visitor-program-2014 (and are also attached as a PDF). Please draw this announcement to the attention of distinguished colleagues and collaborators. The timescale for proposals to the first round of the program, covering January to June 2014, is short (applications close on 14 October). So it is a good opportunity for those who can move quickly! The program has a $30k budget to cover the two rounds of the program in 2014. In order to get the best value-for-money, it will be important for applicants to leverage the Distinguished Visitor program funding with additional funding from other sources. Regards, Matthew Colless. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Professor Matthew Colless FAA FRAS matthew.colless at anu.edu.au Director www.rsaa.anu.edu.au Research School of Astronomy & Astrophysics Telephone: +61-2-6125-0266 The Australian National University Mobile: +61-431-898-345 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This year's event, subtitled "Pathways to Success", explored some of the barriers that can prevent women from progressing in their careers. It also provided an opportunity to have courageous conversations about gender, race, sexual orientation and women?s leadership. Over 90 participants (including 20 who participated online) enjoyed two days of presentations, professional development and discussion. Videos of the workshop can be found here: http://asawomeninastronomy.org/meetings/wia-workshop-2013/. The outcomes of the workshop are summarised in a brief report, which is attached to this message. The WiA Chapter would like to thank Renu Sharma and her ICRAR organising committees for a fantastic event. We thank all the speakers and attendees for sharing their views and experience. What you can do to help the ASA Women in Astronomy Chapter 1) Learn more about the issues that affect women and minorities. - Join the ASA's Women in Astronomy Chapter and take action: http://asawomeninastronomy.org/action/. Men are especially encouraged to join. - Look at the Chapter's web page "How men can help": http://asawomeninastronomy.org/action/howmencanhelp/ - Use these resources to think of practical ways to support equity and diversity at your workplace. Discuss them with your colleagues and implement them. 2) We are now looking for expressions of interest to host the 2014 Women in Astronomy Workshop. Past workshops were hosted by CSIRO (Sydney), Swinburne (Melbourne) and ICRAR (Perth). Please e-mail me if you would like to discuss hosting next year's event. 3) If you attended the workshop at ICRAR, please help us by filling in the short feedback survey available here: http://bit.ly/asawia2013feedback. Thanks to Natasha Hurley-Walker for creating this survey. 4) We are looking for a volunteer to design a 20-minute powerpoint or keynote presentation on the aims of the ASA Chapter for Women in Astronomy. This could be used by members of the WiA Chapter to present at their work places. Please e-mail me if you would like to help. 5) The AAS Committee on the Status of Women in Astronomy publish a weekly newsletter, covering topics of interest to all who work in astronomy and related STEM fields, not just women. Past issues can be found at http://www.aas.org/cswa/AASWOMEN.html . To join AAS Women List by email, please send email to aaswlist+subscribe_at_aas.org from the address you want to have subscribed. You can leave the subject and message blank. 6) Finally, look out for the Women in Astronomy Awards, which will be launched in 2014. More details are coming soon. I look forward to seeing many of you at the Women in Astronomy Workshop 2014. ASKAP is an interferometric array of 36 x 12 m radio telescopes, each equipped with a wide-field phased array radio receiver operating between 700 and 1800 MHz. The array is located at the Murchison Radio-Astronomy Observatory in Western Australia, which will be one of the core sites for the Square Kilometre Array. The ASKAP Early Science Program will be carried out with an array of 12 ASKAP antennas equipped with CSIRO's second generation phased array feeds. These are summarised in the attached document. Thank you to all those people who provided feedback. The working groups and chairs are: 1.1 Galaxies and Cosmology Chair: Lisa Kewley 1.2 Stars and Planets, Chair: Michael Ireland 1.3 The Galaxy Co-Chairs: Jill Rathborne and Naomi McClure-Griffiths 1.4 High Energy and Fundamental Astrophysics, Chair: Duncan Galloway 2.1 International Scale Facilities Chair: Karl Glazebrook 2.2 National and Institutional Scale Facilities Chair: Kate Brooks 2.3 eScience Chair: Darren Croton 3.1 Demographics Chair: Sarah Maddison 3.2 Education, Training and Careers Chair: Kevin Pimbblet 3.3 Industry Chair: Carole Jackson 3.4 Research Funding Chair: Chris Tinney The NCA would like to thank the working group chairs for agreeing to take on this significant role for the benefit of our community. There was strong support from the Australian community following the NCA's first call for expressions of interest in working groups, with over 80 members already indicating their intention to contribute. These working groups are open, and additional membership is strongly encouraged. You will note that the focus of working groups 1.2 and 1.3 has been adjusted from that proposed in July, and that working group 1.4 High Energy and Fundamental Astrophysics has been added. The previously proposed working group 1.4 Theoretical Astrophysics has been removed in favour of having specific discussions of that topic held within the context of each of the working groups 1.1-1.4. Members of the community who have not yet nominated for one or more of the working groups during the initial announcement period and now wish to do so should reply to swyithe at unimelb.edu.au Background: The NCA carries out a formal strategic planning process on a 10-year time scale. This provides the opportunity for Australian astronomy to carry out a stock take of its capabilities, assess its impact both nationally and internationally, provide a vision for the future, and to set priorities and develop strategies on how that vision might be implemented. The document New Horizons, A Decadal Plan for Australian Astronomy 2006-15 has been influential as a tool for presenting our vision to key stakeholders outside the research sector. This includes Australian Astronomy's key stakeholder, the Commonwealth Government, as well as industrial/research partners both nationally and internationally. As the currency of the last Decadal Plan for Australian Astronomy concludes in 2015, it is now time to consider the process for producing the next Decadal Plan, covering the period 2016-25.
