New CEO for Science & Technology Australia Catriona Jackson will be the new CEO for the nation?s peak body for science and technology, president of Science & Technology Australia Professor Michael Holland announced today. Professor Holland said: ?Ms Jackson comes with a 25-year background in politics at the senior level in the federal arena - in Government and Opposition - in tertiary education and in print and radio journalism.? ?Most recently she led the Communication and External Liaison Office at The Australian National University and prior to that was a senior staff member for former science and research Minister Senator Kim Carr. ?We have every confidence that Ms Jackson will be a forceful and intelligent advocate for the sector and we welcome her to this challenging role as we enter a critical election year. ?Ms Jackson replaces Anna-Maria Arabia, who has been the face, heart and soul of Science & Technology Australia for the past 3 years. ?The science community has been very fortunate to be so well served by such a passionate and professional advocate and campaigner. ?Ms Arabia will be sorely missed by all of us at Science and Technology Australia. We are very pleased that she has taken up a senior position at Questacon, and we look forward to working with her as she pursues her passion for science and its role in boosting the nation?s prosperity.? _______ Catriona Jackson - 0417 142 238 Professor Michael Holland ? 0407 960 782 _______ Also: 2013 PRIME MINISTER?S PRIZES FOR SCIENCE ARE OPEN FOR NOMINATIONS http://scienceandtechnologyaustralia.org.au/ And: STA THANKS MINISTER EVANS, WELCOMES MINISTER BOWEN http://scienceandtechnologyaustralia.org.au/in-the-media/sta-thanks-minister-evans-welcomes-minister-bowen/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This workshop will take place at the Australia Telescope National Facility in Sydney, part of CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science. We are currently accepting registrations and abstract submission via the webpage. There is no registration fee, however we will be holding a workshop dinner that will require payment (amount to be confirmed). The workshop will consist of invited talks, contributed talks and discussion, with three days of scheduled programme and two optional days for participants to engage in further discussion and collaborations. The aim of the workshop is to bring experts in the field together to review the current standing of each topic, discuss latest results and foster collaborations to address the remaining questions. Keen to share your knowledge with the astronomers of tomorrow? We are currently looking for speakers to assist the unique outreach programme of "CAASTRO in the Classroom" (CitC). Using videoconferencing facilities, we provide the opportunity for you to discuss modern astronomy with hundreds of students across NSW in a short session - all from the comfort of your own office! Previous speakers have included PhD students, postdocs, professors, and even Nobel laureates - talking about everything from the solar system to the Big Bang. There have even been talks on the sounds of space, and the Aboriginal interpretation of constellations. So you can talk about almost anything you find interesting. We need *you* to help CAASTRO in the Classroom to reach out to the younger generation and spark continued interest in science and physics! Talks are scheduled from next week, and continue on a regular basis throughout the year. If you'd be interested in sharing your skills with the kids, or have any questions, then please drop us a line at citc at caastro.org or visit www.caastro.org/citc for further details. We really look forward to hearing from you. Registration will be opening shortly on February 25th. Where? Powerhouse Museum, Sydney When? 22 - 26 September, 2013 How do galaxies form and evolve? What shapes galaxies? What are the roles of supermassive black holes and bars in galaxy evolution? Nature and nurture both play important roles in galaxy evolution and the aims of this meeting are to: (i) further develop our understanding of the many underlying physical processes that are responsible for shaping the galaxies that we observe in the Universe around us; and (ii) showcase the high impact scientific contributions by Galaxy Zoo to the study of galaxy evolution. To catch the galaxies in the act of transformation, huge samples of galaxies are needed before we can identify one that is in the stage of transformation, especially if these transformation processes occur relatively quickly. A direct consequence of very large surveys is the emergence of "big data" science which severely challenges traditional data processing techniques. Hence, there exists a great need to develop a variety of techniques to fully maximise the scientific return. Whether you're already working with Galaxy Zoo data, curious about how it might inform your science, or if you just want to spend a few days thinking about galaxy evolution, we hope you'll join us. With more large surveys coming from next generation facilities such as LSST and ASKAP, this meeting will also act as a springboard for Galaxy Zoo-like projects using very large datasets. More details about this event can be found from this website: bit.ly/gzconference If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
