Please note that the AAO is prepared to consider co-hosting arrangements for one of the Fellows with another Australian institution, in exchange for a funding contribution towards the Fellow's costs. Interested applicants and a representative from their potential host institution should contact Stuart Ryder in advance of the deadline for further information. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Australian Gemini Office within the Australian Astronomical Observatory is currently advertising for two AusGO Research Fellows. These appointments are available from 1 Jan 2013 - 31 Dec 2015. The AusGO Research Fellows will spend 50% of their time on AusGO activities including supporting Australian users of the Gemini 8m and Magellan 6.5m telescopes, and 50% on their research. A summary of the position is available at http://www.aao.gov.au/jobs/ and the full details and the online application process are at http://innovationjobs.nga.net.au/ (Click on the "Australian Astronomical Observatory" link) Please note that referees must be requested to send letters of reference, by the deadline for applications, to jobs at aao.gov.au. The closing date for applications is: *********************** Friday 30 November 2012 *********************** Further details of the roles and responsibilities of the positions, as well as the application procedure, can be found from the above web pages. The Observatory comprises the 3.9-metre Anglo-Australian Telescope and the 1.2-metre UK Schmidt Telescope near Coonabarabran, NSW, and a brand new headquarters in North Ryde, just 15 km from the centre of Sydney. The AAO is a vibrant and diverse centre of research, with a scientific staff of 18 highly active and productive astronomers, as well as hosting the Australian Gemini Office. Regular interaction with universities, and a twice-yearly Vacation Student program for undergraduates, also provides excellent student supervision opportunities. Any questions about the position can be directed to the Australian Gemini Scientist (sdr at aao.gov.au) and about the application procedure to Rajni Prasad (jobs at aao.gov.au). The Australian Astronomical Observatory supports flexible working arrangements, including part-time positions where appropriate, and is an equal opportunity employer. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Dr Stuart Ryder, FASA Tel: +61 (02) 9372-4843 Australian Gemini Scientist Fax: +61 (02) 9372-4880 Australian Astronomical Observatory Mobile: (0419) 970834 P.O. The same information is available on the Astronomy Australia web-site at http://astronomyaustralia.org.au/astac.html We would like to draw your attention to the following key points: 1. The time available to Australian researchers for computational astrophysics on world-class facilities has increased markedly over the last few years. This is a great time to be working in this area. 2. The GPU facility gSTAR, located at Swinburne, offers users an opportunity for very high performance computational power for appropriately written code. 3. The deadline for this current round of proposals is 27 November, 2012 so that there is adequate time to prepare a good proposal. 4. We are particularly keen to encourage graduate students and early career researchers to become involved in this rapidly developing field. Modern computer hardware and software offers the capacity to perform simulations of numerous astrophysical situations at high resolution and in at least three dimensions. Advisers are available to assist people in getting started with their computational projects. I am currently advertising a 3-year postdoctoral position in support of New Zealand's science involvement in the MWA & ASKAP. The successful candidate will work within the Radio Astronomy Group at the Victoria University of Wellington on a project to understand diffuse radio emission with the MWA and later ASKAP. Ideally we are looking for someone with a background in interferometry who can advance survey science, particularly for diffuse extragalactic sources, with MWA and ASKAP. Further details of the position and the online application portal can be found here: http://vacancies.vuw.ac.nz/positiondetail.asp?p=6405 Please pass this on to your colleagues, or contact me if you would like further information about this opportunity.
