AGUSS provides an exciting research opportunity for students who have completed at least two years of an undergraduate degree in Physics, Maths, Astronomy or Engineering. Students will spend 10 weeks in the period Dec 2012 - Feb 2013 based in La Serena, Chile carrying out a research project under the supervision of Gemini South researchers, and visit both the Gemini South 8m telescope and the Magellan 6.5m telescopes. We would be grateful if ASA members could bring this to the attention of any suitably experienced undergraduates they may be teaching or supervising, and encourage them to apply. A poster promoting this opportunity is available for download at http://ausgo.aao.gov.au/new_aaosf_aguss_poster2.pdf Applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents enrolled at an Australian university. The Australian Gemini office will pay the return airfare from Australia to the town of La Serena, Chile, and provide a stipend of ~A$690 per week. Details on how to apply are available at http://ausgo.aao.gov.au/aguss.html The closing date for applications is 31 August 2012. Late applications will not be considered. Prof. Davies is a leader in the SAURON and ATLAS3D surveys of nearby early-type galaxies and will give a keynote talk at the workshop. He will also give a CAS seminar on Thursday 4th October at 11:30am. The main purpose of this workshop is to highlight current research on nearby spheroidal galaxies and promote informal discussion. We hope to include a range of topics, eg the properties (sizes, kinematics, stellar populations, gas content etc.) of nearby elliptical and lenticular galaxies (including BCGs and dwarfs), mass and luminosity-based scaling relations of spheroidal systems, the growth of spheroid components in nearby galaxies (by secular evolution and/or merging), and the influence of environment on spheroidal systems. The workshop will take place from 2-5:00pm on Wednesday 3rd October at the Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing. Participants are encouraged to gather at Haddons (ground floor of the Centre) for an informal lunch at 1pm. The workshop will consist of a series of 15 min contributed talks on the above topics (with an extra 5 min allocated for questions/discussion). There will be no registration fee. Tea and coffee will be provided during the afternoon. While principally targeted at researchers in Victoria, visitors and out-of-state researchers are most welcome to attend. If you wish to attend the workshop please email BOTH Nic Scott (nscott at astro.swin.edu.au) AND Duncan Forbes (dforbes at astro.swin.edu.au) by the 3rd Sept. 2012. If you wish to contribute a talk to the workshop please mention this in your registration email and include a title and brief 3-5 line abstract for your proposed contribution. We look forward to welcoming you to Swinburne, Nic Scott and Duncan Forbes ******************************************* -- Dr. Nicholas Scott Postdoctoral Research Associate Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing Swinburne University of Technology Melbourne, Australia Email: nscott at astro.swin.edu.au Phone: +61 (0)3 92145165 -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... PhD Scholarships at Swinburne University: Expressions of Interest due 17th September http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/study/postgradstudy.html The Centre for Astrophysics & Supercomputing (CAS) at Swinburne University of Technology (Melbourne, Australia) invites applications for its PhD program and scholarships from Australian and international students. Expressions of Interest for PhD scholarships beginning in 2013 are due by September 17, 2012. With 16 research faculty and 50 postdocs and students, CAS offers a vibrant, research-focused and friendly atmosphere where PhD students help conduct - and learn how to lead - cutting-edge research. CAS has a collaborative agreement with Caltech guaranteeing up to 20 nights per year on the 10-m Keck Telescopes (Hawaii). CAS also hosts "The Green Machine" and the GPU-based "gSTAR" - two of Australia's most powerful supercomputers. Our research strengths cover many areas of astronomy, from cosmology and the large-scale structure of the Universe, to quasars and the most distant known galaxies, to clusters and groups of galaxies, down to our own Milky Way, its structure and fascinating contents: pulsars, neutron stars, globular clusters, stars and planets. We also research 3-D visualisation techniques and applications of advanced scientific computing. CAS scholarship stipends are, at minimum, AUD$26,728 per year (tax free) for both Australian and international PhD students. In addition to their scholarship stipend, students are allocated a high-end computer and may access internal research funds for telescope observing trips, conferences etc. Swinburne's Hawthorn campus is situated in a lively, urban setting just minutes by public transport from Melbourne's city centre. A relocation allowance is available for students and their dependents. Other benefits include thesis publication allowance, standard 4-week p.a. recreation leave plus sick leave (including carer leave), paid maternity (12 weeks) and partner leave entitlements. For details about postgraduate study at CAS, including available supervisors, PhD topics and how to apply, see http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/study/postgradstudy.html The deadline for Expressions of Interest is September 17th, 2012. Shortlisted applicants will then be invited to discuss PhD projects with possible supervisors well before Swinburne's formal scholarship deadline (October 29th, 2012).
