From mita.brierley at astronomyaustralia.org.au Mon Jun 4 08:48:46 2012 From: mita.brierley at astronomyaustralia.org.au (Mita Brierley) Date: Mon, 4 Jun 2012 08:48:46 +1000 Subject: [ASA] Reminder: ASTAC call for proposals closes 8th June 2012 Message-ID: <007501cd41db$08f1f3d0$1ad5db70$@astronomyaustralia.org.au> Reminder: Astronomy Supercomputer Time Allocation Committee: Call for Proposals - NCI, gSTAR/swinSTAR, Epic, Fornax Call closes Friday 8th June 2012 Attached is a call for proposals for time on a number of Australian Supercomputer Facilities for Q3-Q4 in 2012. The same information is available on the Astronomy Australia web-site at http://astronomyaustralia.org.au/astac.html We would like to draw your attention to the following key points: 1. The time available for computational astrophysics on internationally competitive facilities has increased markedly over the last year. This is a good time to be working in this area. 2. The GPU facility gSTAR, located at Swinburne, offers users an opportunity for very high performance computational power for appropriately written code. 3. Fornax, the second supercomputer installed as part of the Pawsey Centre project, is also a GPU facility and is now available for general access. 4. The deadline for this current round of proposals is 8 June, 2012 so that there is adequate time to prepare a good proposal. 5. ASTAC is particularly keen to encourage graduate students and early career researchers to become involved in this rapidly developing field, which offers the capacity to perform simulations of numerous astrophysical situations at high resolution and in three dimensions. Advisers are available to assist people in getting started in this area. ASTAC Lindsay Botten (NCI Director; ex-officio), Jarrod Hurley (Swinburne Supercomputer Manager; ex-officio), Geoff Bicknell (Chair, Australian National University), John Lattanzio (Monash University), Geraint Lewis (University of Sydney), Jon Smillie (NCI user consultant), Luke Hodkinson (Swinburne supercomputer user consultant) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Dear Users of the Australia Telescope National Facility, The Australia Telescope Users Committee (ATUC) meet regularly to discuss issues that affect users of the ATNF. The next ATUC meeting is to be held at the ATNF headquarters in Marsfield on the 11h and 12th July, 2012. Exact meeting times will be posted on the ATUC webpages a week or two before the meeting. On the morning of the 11th, an Open Session will be held that consists of reports and updates on the various aspects of ATNF operations. All users are welcome to attend the Open Session. An agenda for the Open Session will be made available on the ATUC web page. In the afternoon and on the 12th, ATUC hold a Closed Session, during which a report to the ATNF Director is drafted. If you, as a user (or potential user) of the ATNF, are aware of any issues that need to be raised at the next ATUC meeting, would like to present a short topic for discussion, or would like to offer praise for the many ATNF achievements, please contact any member of ATUC over the next few weeks. Information on ATUC and how to contact its members can be found at: http://www.atnf.csiro.au/management/atuc (ATUC reports, responses, online feedback form) As an alternative or additionally to contacting an ATUC member, you can post suggestions, praise, complaints to the ATUC forum pages: http://atuc.freeforums.org/ Regular ATUC summaries are in the ATNF newsletter http://www.atnf.csiro.au/news/newsletter Regards, Chris Phillips (for) John Dickey ATUC Chair From mita.brierley at astronomyaustralia.org.au Tue Jun 5 15:34:58 2012 From: mita.brierley at astronomyaustralia.org.au (Mita Brierley) Date: Tue, 5 Jun 2012 15:34:58 +1000 Subject: [ASA] ASTAC Deadline Extension Message-ID: <00db01cd42dc$f23facb0$d6bf0610$@astronomyaustralia.org.au> ASTAC call for proposals deadline extended to 5pm, Monday 18th June ASTAC set a deadline of 8 June for the latest round of supercomputing proposals. However, the conjunction of this date with the ARC DP rejoinder round, which closes on 14 June with varying local deadlines, was unforeseen and a number of people have requested an extension of the ASTAC deadline. Since there is likely to be a significant overlap between DP and ASTAC applicants we are extending the ASTAC deadline to 5 pm, Monday 18 June. We are seeking to appoint scientists with established records of excellence in research in astrophysics and/or instrument development in radio astronomy, and the potential to play leading roles in instrumentation development for the SKA project. The University of Manchester is one of three major UK university contributors to the SKA, together with Cambridge and Oxford, and its Jodrell Bank Observatory is the designated location of the international headquarters of the SKA Organization, the UK-based legal entity that directs the project. The University also operates the e-MERLIN interferometer which is an SKA Pathfinder instrument. SKA activity in Manchester encompasses the science case and a number of engineering developments including the hardware design, construction, and verification of the signal & data transport and synchronization & timing sub-systems, non-imaging processing for pulsars and transients, and aperture array receiver design. The successful applicants are expected to be scientists of international standing with an active interest in leading the design and development of substantial elements of the SKA and able to work with the central SKA Office, university and other academic collaborators in the UK and elsewhere, and industry. Expertise in non-imaging processing for pulsar and transient research or optical data transmission with application to signal and data transport and timing and sychronisation systems, would be of particular interest. Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Richard Schilizzi. Email: Richard.Schilizzi at manchester.ac.uk; Telephone: +44 (0)161 275 4055. Application forms and further particulars are available from our website www.manchester.ac.uk/jobs. Closing date: 30 June 2012. Please quote reference EPS-01161.
