The sharp-eyed among you will notice that the Google logo (only Australia I think ) represents Ruby Payne-Scott who would have been 100 today. She was an Australian pioneer in radiophysics and radio astronomy, and was the first female radio astronomer.

The ear phones in the cartoon image may upset the true radio astronomers (someone paid too much attention to the movie 'Contact'?) but clicking on the cartoon of her does lead to a Wikipedia article by ASA member Miller Goss. Miller has also written a popular version of Ruby's story, 'Making Waves, The Story of Ruby Payne-Scott, Pioneer Australian Radio Astronomer.', that will come out in 2013 in the Springer ' Astronomer's Universe ' series .
