<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><i><span style="color:#212121;mso-ligatures:none;mso-fareast-language:EN-GB">Vergil innovates in the tradition of describing apian labour by comparing it multiple times to that of metalworkers. In this talk, I will show an abundant emphasis
on mining and metalworking imagery in Georgics 4 and argue that Vergil's excursus on bees reveals interesting insights about the significance of metal and the metallic in Vergil. <o:p></o:p></span></i></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color:#212121;mso-ligatures:none;mso-fareast-language:EN-GB">Del Maticic is the Blegen Research Fellow in Greek and Roman Studies at Vassar College. He is interested in problems of environment, matter, and labour in Latin literature.
He recently co-edited a volume with Palgrave called <i>Working Lives in Ancient Rome </i>and is working on a manuscript entitled <i>The Invention of Metal in Latin Literature</i>. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
