Abstract:

Textile production must have comprised a significant portion of the Republican economy, but the actual scale and complexity of this industry is often unclear, owing to an ostensible lack of consistent evidence for textile manufacture
in this period. The current paper focuses on the early and essential processes of combing, spinning, and weaving, and aims to produce a general framework for how we should understand the organisation and productivity of the Roman textile economy. We will begin
by establishing a series of rough quantitative models for the scale of textile consumption in the Middle to Late Republic, before using the literary and archaeological evidence to consider what forms of production and trade could have been utilised to meet
this demand. Overall, it will be argued that the Republican textile economy operated at a higher level of intensity and complexity than scholars have sometimes assumed, owing to the (often invisible) economic contributions of free and non-free women to this
industry.
